How Long For Wins?

Two questions:

1....Imagine that starting today, Reeves makes every correct decision relating to Wyoming Athletics. I know there are those who believe that would include changing the locks on Burman's office ... but let's not say what those correct decisions are for the purposes of this hypothetical. Assuming that is the case, how long until a winning football season? How long until we are a conference championship contender?

2....Would it shorten the time to contention to fire everybody (Burman, Sawvell, etc) today? Sends a signal but does it actually get better faster?

For me...I know that a good coach can come in and through the portal be in contention quicker than in the past...but I just don't think that is the only thing holding us back. I think we are a minimum of 3 years away (and that is if everything goes well). I really don't have a good opinion on the second question...can see it both ways.
 
if you hire the right coach, with a competitive NIL compared to the rest of the mountain west, then wyoming can have a lot of success. new mexico has done it, james madison has done it, tulane did it. hell INDIANA won a national championship. it's not *that* complicated

So...quickest road map is:

  1. Hire the right coach
  2. With appropriate NIL
  3. ....profit?
Those NIL funds...Is there a lot of that money sitting on the sidelines right now in Wyoming? I'm sure some is but is there enough?
 
Yes in the present environment of college football it is not unreasonable to expect an immediate turnaround. Actually, if something doesn't happen pretty quickly it likely won't happen. This has nothing to do with building a program. Coaches need to spot talent in the portal and mesh it to win. Athletic directors should know these coaches when they get jobs. Our athletic director is totally clueless. He was pretty mediocre in the previous environment but now he is totally lost.
The other thing I don't buy is that wyoming does not have money. The legislature just appropriated $6 million fir NIL. Berman took that to mean they could just take concessions, ticket sales, television dollars and pay players with that. The department has a budget of $54 million just move some admin salaries to 0layer salaries. There is all kind of money there to pay players. Just move some funds around.

This NIL stuff is like the ultimate moving target. So UW can just pay players directly?

Indiana went from a laughing stock to national champion in 2 years. Of course having the money to get Cignetti, pay players and upgrade facilities is something we cannot duplicate. I do however believe Wyoming could have a winning program in 2 years with the right choices being made.

Yes! The legislature appropriated $6 million last session. This is the same at most public universities. There was pushback against paying players directly so Burman came up with paying them from concessions, television, or ticket sales since that wouldn't be UW paying them and then the $6 million is going to the department. But it's just a shell game. It was kind of creative on his part. But not as creative as is needed. If they want more money to pay players just eliminate some needless positions or coaches. Burman won't look at it like that because he hamstrings the department by putting his own limits on stuff like ths. Its an example of his inability to think outside the box.
 
Hire the right coach with connections to good assistant coaches/recruiters, sign a fair amount of decent players from the portal and you could turn a program around in one season.

It doesn’t have to be tough. Many of you think of Laramie like leprosy. It is because you have been conditioned to predominantly losing for the last 25 years. UW can become a contender again with good leadership and an understanding of how to work collegiate economics.
 
Look down the road at CU. Sanders is getting 11 million a year - guaranteed through 2029. CU NIL is estimated at 15 -20 million. This year might be their 3d 3 win season in the last 4 under Sanders. Their new qb is awful. The team is undisciplined. In many ways, they are us - but financially, the level of disaster is far worse. So spending money doesn't even guarantee mediocrity.
It seems talent evaluation is far more important - especially for the portal. We know Sawvel is off the charts terrible at evaluating talent. And it appears he can't game plan or coach the talent he has.
So we need a recruiter or GM, I suppose. And also a good X's and O's guy. This entire staff will have to go. Hughes can't play and he was foisted on us by our savior OC.
I would prefer we recruit high school players for peanuts. If they develop, then we try and keep them. But paying these small school players just seems to be a waste of money.
