Nick Rolovich is the quarterbacks coach at Cal and from I've found makes $300K. I'd think he might have an itch to headcoach again

So there’s no doubt we’ll be hiring- sooner rather than later, who do we want to see as potential candidates? What strategy does the department take? My 2 cents; go after a proven coach who just didn’t pan out at a higher level. No more FCS newbies. Give me someone who coached their way up the ranks, did well at another G6 program, but wasn’t “good enough” for a P4. Good enough is very different at the P4 level. Thoughts?

The questions are, for any of these guys, could they turn things around or have we sunk too far? Is Wyoming an attractive place to restart a head coaching career? Can we actually pay them enough to want to make a move?

If you want an up and rising young offensive genius - Cam Aiken, the o coordinator from James Madison.

If you want a grizzly veteran with years of experience and who was a head coach in the NFL - Hue Jackson from Georgia State.

Hugh Jackson is not moving from Atlanta to Laramie, Wyoming.

Scott Frost moving from UCF to Wyoming is also laughable, y'all. He was pretty clear in his UCF presser that he's put. And, even if he wasn't, why would he leave a Big 12 school to come to Wyoming?

I tell you what, that JMU culture is amazing. They are very much similar to Boise. Just win - no matter who leaves. We are the opposite. We couldn't win if Nick Saban was coaching for the Pokes.

I don’t know about this. The games now seems to be an event. People want to tailgate, gather, etc. It’s almost like a lot of people couldn’t care less about the product on the field.

In past, with a home slate that was heavily front loaded into the warmer months, I would agree.

With the garbage schedule we have this year, there’s going to be less than 5000 fans for those November games. If we had a team that was competing for the MW championship, the fans would find a way to show up. For a team that’s likely going to have a 1 in the W column, it’s going to be a ghost town. That’s the financial analysis that needs to be done when figuring out if can afford to fire Sawvel. We’re likely going to lose millions in ticket revenue this year.

I find this list a bit unrealistic, frankly. Wyoming is neither an attractive enough location nor, at this point, a good enough job to be pulling established names like this out of retirement or away from comfortable situations.

And even if one of them were interested, what exactly are we selling them? Unless we’re prepared to dramatically increase NIL (probably several times over), we not only have to pay the coach enough to entice him to Laramie; we have to give him enough resources to acquire and retain the players needed to actually run his system. Hiring a recognizable name without fixing the underlying resource problem just gives us an expensive recognizable name.

IMO, we should be looking at the regional up-and-comer. Find an OC or DC who is killing it, understands this part of the country, recruits his ass off, and is ready to proves he belongs in the FBS. Give him Wyoming, knowing full well that, if he succeeds, he’ll probably use us as a stepping stone in three or four years.

That would be a tremendous step up from where we are now because that’s how far we’ve fallen. We shouldn’t be searching for the guy who views Wyoming as the comfortable final stop of his career. We need the ambitious guy who views Wyoming as the place where he can prove he belongs somewhere bigger.

If he wins enough here that a P4 program comes calling, great. It means Wyoming football mattered again.

None of this matters, though, if Burman is making the hire.

I think the more important conversation is who the realistic candidates are for the AD job. I’d be picking up the phone and calling the ADs at Montana State, North Dakota State, and South Dakota State. Those three departments have reached levels of competitive success, fundraising, revenue growth, and facility development that we would kill to see in Laramie.

Get the right person running the department first. Then let that person hire the next football coach.

Sadly, at present due to leadership and funding the football HC job at UW is more like a landmine than a steppingstone. The leadership must be changed first before any quality HC candidates will give UW a look. We've got the new president in place. Now we need a new AD. Hopefully together Reeves and the new AD can convince the board of trustees, the legislature, and donors to invest in UW athletics. Not facilities, but athletes. At this point in time Revenue sharing and NIL are how to move the needle in college sports. UW needs to keep pace with the PAC schools in terms of revenue sharing and NIL if there is any hope to not end up in a C-USA type situation. Make no mistake, the MWC is a team or two away from being as irrelevant as C-USA if one or two of New Mexico, UNLV or Air Force move on.

It's too late to call the AD at NDSU. They've already moved up to FBS and with a better product. Right now, being an AD in Fargo is a better job than an AD in Laramie. SDSU's AD is 57 years old. I'd prefer to hire someone younger, but Justin Sell might be a Craig Bohl type hire. Looking to step up in competition and salary prior to retiring? Leon Costello, MSU AD and Justin Sell spent a lot of years working together at Northern Iowa and SDSU before landing their AD roles. Could Wyoming scrape together enough $ to lure MSU's AD and HC to Laramie? Doubtful but it should be attempted!

We lost probably a million or so in ticket and other revenue (maybe more) when Burman gave away our home opener against North Texas for $0.

This financial analysis should be considered every morning the athletic department has its lights on.

They also have the highest student fee's in the nation. Probably able to do that since JMU is very popular school in the DMV area but should be compared to what Wyoming students pay
