I will be posting the top 10 and bottom 10 PFF player game grades after each game. Like it or not like it, PFF is the measures pro scouts, GM's and college GM's and coaches use for the NIL process and who to draft, recruit and to pay as well as the respective scouts using it as negotiation tool. It is relevant.

Before my retirement, I had coached defense in the Big 10 and in the League. My hope is to put out there who performed and who did not perform. The top 10 graded players should be rewarded the next game and the bottom 10 should be given the opportunity to improve their craft before given game day opportunities.

My experience has shown me that the numbers do not lie, and believe me, the players and their teammates know what their grades are. If a player grades in the top 10 and not rewarded with playing time, his teammates start questioning the process and that is one way a coach will lose his team.

Immediate thoughts are the shocking number of receivers in the lower 10 along with the backs. This obviously can't continue if the offense is to have any potency.
On the defensive side, the lower reps higher graded players obviously need to see more playing time.

Even if you don’t pay attention to grading systems, the players aren’t clueless. They know who the weaknesses are from practices as well as during game play. If the coaches fail to address the weaknesses it will introduce a temptation to consider the portal long before the season ends.

I’m not sure Sawful has the respect factor a $1.5 million dollar coach should command.
 
Gary Rutherford has been terrible in the first two games. There was a lot of hype about him last season - Phil Steele even had him in his All-MWC selections - and then he didn't see the field much.

He has been so bad in the first two games this season as a starter, that we really need to start someone else at that position. That weak side linebacker position in an important one in this defense, and he is just not cutting it.

Kendall Griffin also got absolutely exposed during this game.

I would not be surprised to see Steven Perez in the starting lineup over Rutherford next week. He was all over the field.

They benched him against UNC and why you saw Perez playing at LB

Which is shocking to me. Perez though, solid.
 
Rutherford has been a huge disappointment. All they hype we've heard and zero production on the field. We were looking for him on Saturday, nonexistent. Have not heard his name called in a game yet so far.

He's undersized for that position. He also doesn't read the game well, so he frequently ends up out of position to make the play. Being able to diagnosis the play quickly is hugely important to those LB spots, especially that weakside spot he plays.

He also should have had an interception when CSU ran the pass-back play to their QB. Instead, it bounced off his stone hands and into the CSU QB's hands. A pick there could really have been an early momentum changer.

Would have been negated anyway because our starting corner, Ian Bell, couldn't cover the QB and got called for PI
 
I was listening to Jones Thomas post-game. Media asked why it seemed out of sort on D and he said not all 11 guys were in sync and you can't be successful with only 9 guys on the same page. I wouldn't say a locker fracture but some accountability must be happening.

I did appreciate a direct response from Hughes when he said he played like shit. I know that was obvious but glad to hear a player not sugar coat it

True.

We are either going to have to give other guys a shot at the CB position or only play zone coverage from here on out because we cannot play man to man on the outside any longer.
