Does Obi have another year of eligibility with the new JC rule? Just wondered if anyone has heard anything about this? I saw that he came out for senior night but just thought I would ask if anyone has said anything about this that I haven't seen.

I plan to ask Sunny about this after the season. The short answer is yes, he should have an extra year if he wants it.

I just listened to the roaring repeater podcast. He does have another year of eligibility. However, Sundance said that they cannot afford him. The RR boys think he will get a 6 figure offer for his remaining year.

As much as I’d love for him to stay, I can’t blame him if he can make that kind of money in one year. He’s been a fun player to watch and I’ll follow him either way!

I'm not convinced that Obi will get an offer elsewhere in that range. He's a hell of a player, but he's too streaky to be able to be relied upon to be the #1 player on a talented roster. If we're able to get him to stay in Laramie it would be a great jump start to the roster.

He's a good player, but if that is the going rate for a player of his level, then we are screwed.

We need at least 3-4 players at his level every single year if we want to even challenge for a MWC title. That's a minimum of $300k-$400k every single year.

Does anyone know if any of our basketball players are being paid anything substantial through NIL this year?

I can tell you that relatively substantial amounts were paid in Ike’s last year. Ike apparently collected his paycheck at the end of the season with zero minutes logged, the California crew quit (not sure they ever showed up) and well we know how the rest went down.

NIL doesn’t guarantee anything. I’d rather collect a few Obi D2 guys and let them go to greener George Washington pastures if they are so inclined.

Thinking as I type this...

College sports sure has turned a huge corner...I never thought I would be rooting for a young student-athlete that makes twice (or more) of the annual compensation that I do. And I am old AF, and have been part of the workforce for over 45 years.

I love Wicks but he is going to have to be more innovative when it comes to offense. His Green Bay teams became reliant on Noah Reynolds. It was one screen at the top and everyone else is to stand and watch. This year it is the same for Obi. I hope it is just the fact that there wasn't a ton of talent to score on the wings. I still feel that Jordan Nezbitt wasn't utilized very well this year. He was a top 100 player coming out of high school and scored pretty well at Hampton last year, the same can be said for Dontae Allen. In my opinion Wicks has to change some philosophy on offense or it is going to be Larry Shyatt 2.0 for his teams. I always felt competitive with Coach Shyatt but I also felt like we were playing not to lose instead of being aggressive and playing to win the game.

Moving on to year 2. I am still excited what Sundance Wicks will do here. I just hope he does some self reflection about offensive philosophy and aggressiveness. I think that would help with attendance as well.

Not a surprise. It’s sad though what is happening to college athletics right now. It’s no longer about the school, the facilities, the fan base, rivalries, or a winning tradition. It’s about getting paid. It’s not the players’ faults either, they’re just doing what any human in a position to make good money would do. The NCAA better do something soon or they’ll kill their best commodities in football and basketball. I feel bad for any new, young, coaches that are getting into the game now. It’s gotta be a tough job when you literally don’t know who is going to be on your team until the season is almost underway. I’m getting closer to just being an NFL fan and saving my money to go to one or two of those games a year and let go of season tickets I’ve had for 25 years for UW. Seems like a better investment every time the stupid portal BS starts.

Horseshixxt. Would you put your money into the NFL if your team won 2 games a year? The men's BB team has not even made the MWC quarterfinals since 2022. If we had just won the conference tournament, would you be worried about who was on the team next year? I wouldn't be. I don't care what the player's motivation is. I don't care about any of the other shxt you mentioned. Winning is what matters. And there has been precious little of that at Wyoming for a very long time. Do I like the what is happening regarding college sports? No. If we showed the slightest pulse this year, I would have been at the MW tournament. But the fact is, we are producing a horrible product in the 2 sports that count.
UNLV just fired their BB coach. He had a winning record in the conference for his 4 years and the school said that's not good enough. Our FB coach has a roughly 500 record and stays for 10 years. That says a little about our commitment to winning. The only commitment is to get fans in the seats and coaches will be hired and fired based on that. Only when the financial pain of empty stadiums becomes a reality will there be any action. What's worse: Everyone in the coaching community knows it. Getting good coaches to come here is going to be next to impossible. But we must be a contractor's dream because renovating facilities seems to be our specialty.

It's going to be a revolving door at the coaching position pretty soon...and it won't matter. Until players can make more money here than anywhere else in the conference....nobody is winning here.
