Wyoming R1 university

I am dubious about SER. My point is, the metrics for R1 rely heavily on funding and PhDs. I think Piri churns out over half of all PhDs in Engineering. Maybe wrong. Dunno. Pretty good source but I don’t have independent corroboration.

Irrespective of my concerns about SER, the reality is that R1 might be fleeting because of federal cuts and the internal angst directed by faculty and admin toward Piri and those like him.
I don't really have any knowledge of the inner workings of the academics at UW - would you be able to give me the general gist of why the administration would have issues with Dr. Piri and those like him?

President Seidel released a statement citing ‘changes’ and ‘academic reorganization’ he and his team made since coming to Wyoming largely as the impetus for the R1 designation. As an example, he cites the school of computing which he created and appointed his partner as Director. No mention of School of Energy Resources, Piri or really anything related to Wyoming’s energy research.

This is very interesting considering I am unaware of the school of computing awarding many doctoral degrees and I am not aware of too many large research grants it has acquired other than state appropriations. Maybe someone else has more information on school of computing. University website states it has received a total of $15.7 million in funding from various sources and has 14 total researchers.

lol. Sounds like he’s tooting his own horn. Maybe he should fix the enrollment crisis

UW (and WY generally) is like a pail full of crabs. If one crab gets close to getting free (or in the case of UW and Wyo - appearing better than another prof or department or a neighbor) they drag them back. It is jealousy mixed with an inferiority complex that refuses to celebrate greatness or even being good.

Hence, in part, why the football program has been so shitty in the past, oh, 30 frinking years!!!!!!!

Perhaps he could do this by offering up his private university EV charging parking spot to let students use it while he is not. Seems to be the only EV charging spot right on campus.

That almost sounds like a culture of mediocrity???

The main thing they did in this effort was to pull math and the all the hard sciences out of A&S and putting them in Engineering. It was explicitly stated to be an effort of leveraging our newly-amalgamated STEM subjects to get the R1. Computer Science went to Engineering 20 years ago, but I guess was elevated with Seidel's coming. Thanks for that.

I’m not following the computer science reference. Seidel and his team created the separate School of Computing creating a new Director position that was then filled by President Seidel’s partner. Wyoming now has both its long existing computer science department and a confusingly similar school of computing.

The massive conflict of interest finally made it to the news (after years). As a result, Wyoming is losing its best Dean and genuinely great person Retired Col. Cam Wright.

Wyoming being a global leader in computer science is laughable - almost as laughable as the law school being the beacon of excellence in international law. Good thing the President's partner has Fast Eddie in the head shed to force the colleges that actually can generate excitement to underwrite her whizbang outfit.

UW is a mess. Main campus is in turmoil - again. Whether nepotism is driving Seidel or not, it sure looks like it, which is all that really matters. The athletic department can't even achieve mediocrity anymore, so I'm sure we will have the Communication Ministry on Willett moving to reset the bar even lower, which most in the UW orbit will ingest like a Jim Jones cult member. The state's tax structure is about to be reset, which will have a significant impact on the University. In the past, despite its less-than-mediocre underbelly, UW at least had money to buy Botox to conceal its wrinkles. Soon enough, that won't even be the case.

If UW was an investment, it would grade out at Moody's Ba1 or S&P C or D. Most clown cars at least have wheels - ours is on cinderblocks in the front of the trailer with our BOT sitting mesmerized in the passenger seat with Fast Eddie squeaking his rubber nose.

BOT meeting today to decide Seidel’s future following vote of no confidence in faculty senate.

Seidel still has a job. Unbelievable to me but the BOT is probably fearful of firing any President after the last fiasco of firing Nichols (still with no apparent reason). The whole thing with Seidel and his partner and the creation of the school of computing and subsequent appointment as Dean has been inappropriate from day 1 IMO.

UW continues to step on their own wang. Irritating bell cow contributors like the Pivics and Ellbogen folks is no bueno. At a place where large benefactors are very hard to culture, chapping the butts of two huge, long-term donors is beyond dumb. I swear, Old Main is incapable of NOT shooting themselves in their foot, knee, shoulder, butt, and head - all at once with a single shot rifle. It is truly amazing to behold.

Well, I see that yet another large donor is stepping back from the University in the wake of the mess created by Fast Ed, his Nepo Partner, and the BOT in Laramie. Humphries and Ellbogen are two members of a group of VERY FEW large donors to UW. Good thing we have a great football and basketball team to distract us from the conflagration...oh wait. It's like the Keystone Cops being led by Barney Fife over in Laradise. What a freegin' mess.

It’s cascading. And the BOT pointing the finger at probably their best now former Dean Cam Wright is beyond unbelievable.
