So we have literally the worst offense in the country. We can’t run but we can’t pass either. Our defense is bad. Our special teams is bad. We can’t force turnovers or generate sacks. We are undisciplined. We can’t possess the ball.

Oh…the opposite of Bohl’s philosophy on how to win football games.

I saw this last night on Twitter.. I forget who posted it, but I appreciate the research. The last time Wyoming started this bad:
1913: 0-5
1923: 0-8
1939: 0-7

That’s not true if just looking at W/L. We started 0-6 in 2015. We also started 0-4 in 2002.

I believe those are the only winless seasons in Wyoming history.

We'll have some numbers (that are correct) for the podcast on Wednesday.. but it's going to be ugly. Thanks for the tips on those numbers above

Too bad there’s no way to measure expectations vs results because that would be all anecdotal. But as football goes; this is the biggest letdown I can recall and close to the 2022-2023 basketball disaster.

A really interesting question, as this team had tremendous expectations coming off of 9 wins, a bowl win, 17 returning starters and has been a monumentous let down. Prob moreso than the basketball team you mentioned. Would be really curious if we had our time machine and Craig Bohl didn't retire and things stayed status quo from last season (minus Polasek leaving, that was probably inevitable) what this current season would look like.

For additional tidbits to add to the Magical Misery Tour of Wyoming football:

1939 started 1-0 and finished 1-7-1 scoring a total of 32 points on the season
1970 started 0-4 and finished 1-9 with the lone victory at CSU
1974 started 0-2 and finished 2-9 beating AFA and Utah
1975 started 0-5 scoring 26 points in those games before finishing at 2-9 beating UTEP and AFA
2000 started 0-2 before beating Central Michigan and then finishing 1-10
2001 started 2-1 before finishing 2-10

In looking at the remaining 2024 schedule I would place the AFA game as the most likely game to get a win followed by the SDSU homecoming game. I can't say that there is no chance whatsoever as many of these seasons referenced were all pretty bleak with a win or two and 2024 is no different.

While the statistics may migrate a bit higher as the season progresses and other teams are past the cupcake portions of their schedules, the one fact that remains is rarely has the offense been rated higher than the bottom 10-15% of the FBS and usually in the bottom 3 of the MWC. Quite often AFA ranked higher in conference passing offense with 1/3 of the attempts of Wyoming. Statistics don't always tell the story but the majority of teams with very low ranking offenses are usually sub .500.

As for this team being any different if CB was still the head coach, I have my reservations about that. Just remember the huge expectations following 2016 and 2017 when TVW was the starting QB. 2-6 before Sean Chambers was inserted as a true freshman. The team ended 6-6 but the 4-4 finish left them the only bowl eligible team sitting at home as there were not enough MWC slots available and the conference made a TV deal sending BYU to the Potato Bowl. CB liked his developing QB's that couldn't complete more than about 40% of their passes. I believe CB would be doing about the same given the exact same players as Sawvel.

Could it be that CB knew the program was on the precarious side and decided to get out while he looked good? I don't believe for a moment that CB didn't anticipate some of this because if he thought it was golden then it would mean he didn't know the talent level and since Sawvel was hired at 5 years and $5.8 million this program is in it for the long haul.

This suggestion is actually relatively demonstrably false. We returned 17 starters from a team Bohl led to a 9-4 record!! Bohl had the exact same players basically last year. Bohl’s team beat Texas Tech in the home opener. Sawvel’s team lost to Idaho in the home opener . C’mon man.
