Sawvel - Further Thoughts

A players coach that still holds them to the standards that Bohl set, which I feel is a good thing. Lots of people bitched about this hire, but I think it's going to prove to be a damn good one.

I'll never agree with how this went down. Reality is he wasn't really on a hc track until bj needed a promo. You can argue against that until you're blue in the face, but coincidences rarely just happen.

Now that he's in, I view it like all hc hires. There's always the hc honeymoon phase then games happen. If the Ws come everyone will anoint him the second coming of Roach and Burman a damn genius. If the Ls come, there will be 2 camps. 1 which is forgiving and will make lots of excuses for a 1st year hc and give it time vs those calling out the continuity b.s.

From a pure reality standpoint, probably 3 to 4 years before any meaningful judgement is determined.

While you certainly may be correct, in this day and age, with NIL and the Portal - it is more of a "win now" culture than anytime before. And I believe this years team is suited for that, with HC Sawvel. Not sure what that will look like in 3 or 4 years, there are just too many moving parts...and too many things that will change.

I don't disagree that from an x and o and strategy standpoint, we should get a pretty good feel of PBJ's ability this year.

From an overall hc perspective, I think it's 3 or 4 years. He's running primarily with Bohl’s horses this year. That's to be expected obviously, and will give insight on his gameday and season abilities. However, the ability to run and manage a program won't be obvious for another 3 or 4 years. Can he navigate recruiting, nil, etc. and field a competitive program?

Barring some sort of legal violation...how it went down count's for about 2 cents. The only thing that matters is delivering wins. If his program wins...it doesn't matter how slimy and nepotistic the promotion was. If some immaculately meritocratic process of coach hiring gave us a loser, nobody will point to the perfect process and act like it was the "right" decision.

I have zero clue from a predictive standpoint how good he'll be. I've been optimistic about every new coach going back to Tiller (I'm not old enough to have real thoughts about the hiring of Roach) and nearly all of them except Tiller and Bohl ended up getting terminated.

That is kind of my thought on this...the landscape of college football (especially) will be so much different in 3 or 4 years...I am not sure what the game will even look like. He may be a master now, and a dud later. Or vice-versa. Too many unpredictable variables that will change everything about the game, to even really worry about 2028 at this point.

Agree on that. We might not even be in the same conference or division by then. Could be with wsu/osu or northern co???

I'm glad it doesn't matter to you. That's certainly one perspective.
A moralistic high horse in college sports gets you exactly nowhere. Again...barring something illegal, nobody cares. Is it right, wrong...in between? Who cares. If the pokes win a chip this year (seems very unlikely) can I count on you to diminish the accomplishment by bringing up the supposed injustice that was done when Jay was hired? I suspect not.

I worked quite a bit with Joe Glenn, Bohl, and Sawvel. I feel Jay is a combo of the other 2 in that he's very approachable and a player's coach like Glenn. But he's not afraid to be the bad guy and get on someone's ass like Bohl did.

He's also less 'old school' than the other 2.

If this will translate to success, I don't know. But I think these are all good things to have in a HC.

I said I will never agree with that process regardless of the rest of cfb's actions. I'm glad you're OK with it. Seems like the majority are.

I always wish the best for UW even if employees pull some shady crap.

Well... For sure the state of college football has jaded the way I view it. Being "ok" with it is just the same as being "ok" with business.... And it is a business. There is no moral valance here.

I think most people don't view the hiring the same way you do because it's not self evidently obviously "shady" despite your assertions to the contrary. Your opinion about that is interesting and I don't necessarily discount it outright... You have obviously thought deeply about it. I would imagine that if the defense were not literally the strength of this team for past few years... Then more people would feel like you.... But elevating the people on that side of the ball is completely defensible.

And to reiterate....I don't have sky high hopes for the future of Wyoming sports but that has more to do with the climate of college athletics than the people at UW.

It's been hashed and re-hashed. I'm glad others are happy with it.

I wish the athletes the best and success for UW. I have no idea how PBJ will do but he has a team that should be competitive. It should be a good year.

I’m happy that coach Savel has taken over the program. I’m also tired of looking at every MWC ARTICLE with Boise as the premier team, makes me sick. Time to make a statement this year and put this team and the UW as a contender, we have the schedule to make it happen. Come on coach,we have the talent. GO POKES

I believe the hire was the least distruptive to the program, and support it. My belief in Sawvel was confirmed for me when Bertagnole came back for another year. I think it said a lot about how the players feel toward him. 3-4 years who knows. College athletics is so screwed up. But, I think it’ll be a good year to be a Poke fan. Just my 2 cents……..

Can't recall a more down to earth coach at Wyoming. The kind of guy you would love to go to the bar to catch the game with. I just hope he can maintain a level of expected discipline.
The Jeff Linder act on the sidelines was embarrassing. We have no discipline. We have brown pants, names on the back and no direction. I was so wrong.
