Be the Next Success Story!
On Thursday, our remaining wrestlers will head to Philadelphia to compete. Right now: 149 Gabe Willochel (#30 seed), 157 Jared Hill (#13 seed), 184 Eddie Neitenbach (#19 seed), 197 Joey Novak (#15 seed), HWT Sam Mitchell (#30 seed). Wyoming could get another guy in the brackets but will require a 141 to drop out and that would insert 141 Cole Brooks into the bracket at the #33 seed. I am not going to sit here and try and dissect the brackets and play the what if game on if they win what will happen next for them. You can find the brackets here 2025 Brackets if you would like to see the battles they have Thursday morning. Every year you read about a 33 seed becoming an AA (Wyatt Sheets) or a 26 seed busting brackets on their way to an...
Daniel Reynolds: National Champion
From UW Athletics VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (March 14, 2025) – Senior thrower Daniel Reynolds won Wyoming’s first national title since 2005 with a facility and meet-record throw of 82’ 3 1/2" (25.08 meters) in the weight throw to seal an undefeated season at the 2025 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championship on Friday. Reynolds’ championship meet started with a bang that would have won the title off the bat. His throw of 80’ 9” (24.61 meters) was just over an inch shy of the previous meet record and was nearly five inches more than the rest of the field. After faulting on his second toss, he followed up with a throw of 78’ 3 1/2” (23.86 meters) while the field started to catch up with two others eclipsing the 24-meter mark. While he entered...
March Matness Has Arrived
I am sad the season is coming to a close, but excited to see the full 10 members compete one more time together this weekend; depending on how they fair Saturday and Sunday we could see all 10 again in Philadelphia March 20-22. The allocations, seeds, and tentative brackets (pending weigh-ins) have been released; let’s break them down: 125 Garrett Ricks (7 allocations) – will come in unseeded, right now, he is slated to face #6 Lorenzo from OU to open up the tournament. Lorenzo defeated an injured Volk earlier in the year so expect stiff competition. Two wins gets ricks at least into the 7th place match and 3 wins qualifies him for NCAA. He has progressively been getting better after coming out of retirement mid-year. He will have...
Basketball in the Home Stretch
With the tournament a few weeks away I took some time to break down tournament scenarios. First, the elephant in the room, this has been a disappointing season for men's basketball. However, the team has shown enough this season to make me believe that there are some ways for them to make noise in Vegas this year. Before we get into any of that, though, here are the current standings and remaining games for the conference. To break it down team by team: New Mexico - They've got Air Force and UNLV at home, both of whom they beat on the road. They had a tough time with Nevada at home, so it should be an interesting road game. Still, I think the Lobos win out and take the 1 seed. Utah State - With 2 games left they've still got a shot...
Where Did the Dual Season Go?
Feels like yesterday we were entering October and the start of the wrestling season. Kudos to Coach Branch and Coach Sentes (Campbell) for another great event to kick-off the NCAA wrestling season. I am sure they are planning another special event next year the social coverage in unprecedented for two of the smaller schools; top of Devil’s Tower? Two years ago, Wyoming would send out 10 different lineups to 10 different duals and well the record would reflect a team trying to find their identity with a 1-9 record and a 10th place finish at Big 12s. Last year same issue with lineups, however, Wyoming recovered and finished .500 with a really young team. This year the lineups were again in flux due to injury and illness. Wyoming...
Wyoming Football Roster Math
As promised here is a quick written breakdown of where Wyoming stands with the football roster and the drive to get down to 105 before the first game of the season. After the December signing day, portal season and February signing day the Wyoming Cowboys stand at 120 players. That is 15 above the new mandated number and you can see the position breakdown below: Here are a few quick thoughts on how Wyoming gets to 105 or below: There are about 14 position player walk-ons who will have to seriously outperform scholarship players to earn a spot on the 105-man roster so that right there gets you to 106 but I'm sure a few will stick. It's being reported that Wyoming wants to add 3-4 transfers when the portal opens up for the spring...
Wyoming Wrestling Finding Their Moxy
Hey Wyoming Wrestling Fans! It’s been a minute since I wrote about our Cowboys, but they have won four of their last five duals with some of the boys on some real winning streaks. I was concerned that more duals on the road were going to be tough and ruin confidence, however, I was proven wrong. Wyoming won a tough dual and a come from behind dual against Oregon State. They got down 7-0 quick but Cole Brooks set the tone and wrestled the best I have seen him wrestle in some time this season. Gabe followed up with a Gabe match of going down 9-2 but winning 11-10. The OSU wrestler he defeated recently MD’d Jordan Abas from Stanford. Eddie and Joey would put the dual out of reach with a MD and Fall. OSU was chippy and sounded like their...
Pokes in the Pros: Divisional Weekend
- From UW Press Release - The University of Wyoming is still alive in the NFL playoffs. Former Wyoming quarterback, Josh Allen, and Buffalo held on for a 27-25 victory over Baltimore in the Divisional Round. Sunday night’s game was perfectly built for a guy who used to sling it all over the High Plains. It was cold and snowy in Orchard Park, and while that may have tempered the stat line, it didn’t keep Allen from being effective. He finished the game 16-for-22 for 127 yards. Allen was a workhorse on the ground, carrying it 10 times for 20 yards and a pair of touchdowns. The Bills advance to the AFC Championship for the second time in Allen’s tenure. They did so in 2021, as well, where they fell at Kansas City, 38-24. Buffalo will...
Wyoming Wrestling Mid-Year
Hey There Cowboy Wrestling Fans! I want to apologize for the long delay; I have been moving to a new house and starting an internship. We are finally settled in just in time for dual season followed by the Big 12 and NCAA run for the boys. Let’s start with the bad news in Jore Volk has been ruled out for the season due to an injury sustained against Spratley. This team has been the walking wounded throughout the year thus far with the following men missing time: Ethan Ducca – coming off knee surgery and at a new weight class 174 Riley Davis – had a season ending shoulder injury last year and it appears to still affect him. He has been at 174 and 184 this year for the pokes. Eddie Neitenbach – the freshmen burst onto the scene...
Pokes in the Pros: Super Wildcard Weekend
From UW Press Release: A pair of former University of Wyoming student-athletes advanced to the NFL playoffs. However, only one was available in the Wild Card Round, and he didn’t just survive but he thrived and advanced. Josh Allen and Buffalo downed Frank Crum and Denver, 31-7, on Sunday. Allen was his normal stout self while Crum was injured and didn’t suit up for the second week in a row. Allen was 20-for-26 for 272 yards and two touchdowns. He added 46 yards on eight carries. The Bills advance to take on Baltimore in the Divisional Round. That game is slated for Sunday at 4:30 p.m. in Buffalo.
Pokes in the Pros: Week 18
- From UW Athletics - The National Football League’s regular season came to a close Sunday. A pair of former University of Wyoming student-athletes advanced to the playoffs with their respective organizations, while a handful of others closed the book on their 2024-25 stat line. Josh Allen is the most notable former Poke who’ll be suiting up in the playoffs. He played one snap Sunday to extend his consecutive-games-played streak to 115. Allen, in the regular season, was 307-for-483 for 3,731 yards with 28 touchdowns and six interceptions. He added 531 yards on 102 carries with 12 scores. The Bills, who finished 13-4, will host Denver on Sunday during Wild Card Weekend. Below is a list of the other former Wyoming Cowboys and how they...
Pokes in the Pros: Week 17
- From UW Press Release - It may resemble directions on a shampoo bottle, but that’s the most appropriate way to describe what Josh Allen is doing. It’s rinse, lather and repeat. Allen made history in the Bills’ 40-14 victory over the New York Jets on Sunday, which locked Buffalo into the AFC’s No. 2 seed. His big game gave him 40 touchdowns in 2024, marking the fifth straight season of at least 40 touchdowns, and that’s the first time that feat has been accomplished in the history of the game. Allen’s final stat line Sunday was 16-for-27 for 182 yards and two touchdowns. He added 17 yards on five carries with another score. For the season, Allen is 307-for-483 for 3,731 yards with 28 touchdowns and just six picks, while adding 531...
