Regarding Stitt

If I'm Burman, I would consider asking Stitt to be OC/assistant HC should the new coach be willing. Let's be honest, we are all hoping for a proven coach that is looking to get back on track.

If that happens, I'm okay with the idea that they will be moving on when that coach is successful (yes I said when). Consideration should be given now for a "grooming" type of situation. From what I've read, Stitt has a pretty good offensive mind; combined with someone like Tedford, he might really flourish.

When the new coach is successful and moves on, pass the reigns to Stitt. Hire a new "groomee" and repeat.

Very simplistic and idealistic, I realize, but I do not think it is out of the realm of possibility. It would be a logical career path for Stitt as well.

Are you related to Stitt? Who knows if Tedford would move on quickly, he was at his last job for 11 seasons. I think this idea is WAY out of the realm of possibilities and is in the realm of were the aliens nice to you when they beamed you up? Anytime an AD gets into micromanaging a sport like this it is the recipe for disaster!
 
RTJ has a good idea... I like the idea of Stitt as an OC.. either groom him to take the reigns at UW if a HC wants to leave, or groom him so he can take his own HC job elsewhere.

That is why the caveat of "if the new coach is willing" was put in there. Realistically, we are looking at 3-5 years with this hire, either way. In 5 years, the new coach will either be fired or moved up (based on the candidates that are available).

I see no reason to stick our head in the sand and think we are going to hire someone like Tedford or Mangini, for example, and be under the delusion that they will be here for long-term. Thus, it does not seem unreasonable to have discussions about prepping a good young coach.

Stitt does seem to have some innovative ideas on O. Perhaps 3-5 years under a seasoned FBS coach is just what he needs. I never think it is a good idea to prepare for failure. I think we prepare for success.

Let the HC decide who is on his staff, and if the door is already being made ready for Tedford to leave before he even arrives I feel that is a situation fraught with crossed responsibilities and problems. The AD needs to stay out of decision process for the HC period, the best that I would think could happen would be to suggest period, but the final decision would be Tedford's or whomever is the HC. I would hope that our new HC would stay longer than a year or two, and I would have a problem with a HC that that was his plan. Tedford is not an old guy, and if the money is right why shouldn't he stay. He has coached at a big name school and if we show him the support both financially and otherwise why shouldn't he build himself a great situation in Laramie? Keep his home in Reno, with no state income taxes he could have a really nice living here. I am not ready to show any HC but especially Tedford the door before he even arrives.

All this Stitt talk is a waste of time. The new head coach will hire who he wants to be on his staff based on who he has previous relationships with. No AD worth anything would demand that a HC hire an OC of the AD's choosing.

This idea we have a guy on staff that can take over if the HC takes another job is laughable. Why do we get caught up with such talk? If Tedford comes and goes 8-4 in year one and 9-3 in year two and then takes a better job the program would in better shape than when he came in and we would be in line to make another good hire. UW will always be a stepping stone job and we should accept that.

Nobody would be showing him the door upon his arrival, but it would be dealing with what is reality, IMO. I'm okay with a coach wanting to come in, get back on their feet, and take a big time job. That means he was successful.

I think Stitt would be a good option and not out of line for Burman to suggest or inquire if Tedford would be interested. These discussions would be behind closed doors, obviously, but, again, I see no reason to stick our head in the sand about the reality of the situation.

Still, as I said, the ultimate decision would be up to the HC, but there is no reason that Burman can't suggest Stitt apply for the job.

x1000. Beat me with your post. We are a stepping stone program, just like MAC and Sun Belt programs. If we land a big name coach you want him following the Boise model. Have him grooming his successor and building a coaching tree of strong in demand assistant coaches. But I also agree you have to let him pick the coaches that he wants on his staff.
 
Good idea but we can't tell a Tedford who to hire.

A post a few days ago said something like: Ten days of high hopes and then we wake up to someone I haven't heard of or don't like.

My guess we wake up to a Breske. Getting Stitt as OC with a HC hire like this might be less of a let down after the hype of all the "big names".

Boise is no doubt the exception to the rule. What other schools have done what they have done with a string of head coaches? We have to find our own model.

I guess you could say Utah, and Utah State.

But I do get your point. It's not all that common.

Before us Wyoming fans start worrying about if we will have success if/when Tedford leaves (he isn't even our coach yet!) we should just worry about having success when he is here.
Can't have continues success unless we get someone to have SOME success first.

Boise State is arguably the only team in "our division" with sustained success sans a few teams that maintained a HC for long-term. I see no reason to continue with what doesn't work and try to emulate what does. The key obviously is the right HC.

We've chased the next big thing in coaches for the past decade. I would say that if we have a seasoned coach come in like a Tedford, that we capitalize on that to try to emulate the Boise model.

Another good example would be Northern Illinois; it seems to be working okay for them as well.

My point being that if we hire a seasoned coach, we should also take that opportunity to prepare for the future. As everyone agrees, ultimate decision are up to the HC.

Vic K came from the Dimel staff. Dimel was not a seasoned HC.

The key is the right HC. If Tedford materializes, I think it would be an opportunity to think about this model.
 
I would love to have Stitt on as an OC. An article I read somewhere stated that he would be willing to be an FBS OC if he had complete control over the offense. However, if we get Tedford I don't think that would happen since he has an offensive background.

I don't think an AD can or should tell a coach who to hire but he could during the interview process find out his thoughts about someone or if they know them and when asking about there potential hires for assistants ask about particular people. But probably a moot point if Tedford comes here(I know, we are a long ways from that right now).

Well, we need to find our Rich Brooks first.

I actually don't hate the Stitt idea. I'd rather take a risk on a guy like that who's a bit of an outsider but is genuinely innovative than some of the other names who've been discussed. He wouldn't be the first guy with a similar career path that wound up in the big time. I know that we need to get the budgetary issues fixed but if you're operating with limited resources the Moneyball era teaches us that we have to find market inefficiencies and exploit them.
