WyoNation Blog: MW Announces New Basketball Format

After the first round of games it should be reseeded so #1 gets the lowest remaining seed and #3 gets the highest remaining seed. Other than that I like it.

I like it. This is probably the best solution to the unbalanced conference. I would have been okay with #4 and #5 in the first round, but I'm not up in arms about them having a bye.

The format will work no doubt. Other conferences use a similar system that has an odd number of teams. I guess if you want the most fair tournament possible you could like mentioned above reseed teams after the first round but having a strsight bracket is fine too. At lest we know that there is no longer the dreaded pig tail game.

The only issue I see with this format is that it completely screws over any fans of the Women's tournament. Their opening round is Monday, quarterfinals on Tuesday, then the semifinals aren't until Friday. My guess is that a lot of would be fans that might travel for the women's tournament, won't/can't afford to potentially spend the whole week in Vegas for the chance their squad makes the final 4. What they should have done is had the women playing at a different arena in parallel to the men's tournament for the opening two rounds, then bring them all together for the Friday/Saturday games.

Great point. And UNLV / Las Vegas has the facility to do so, right next to the T&M (Cox Arena).

It just makes too much sense obviously. I really don't see any reason they wouldn't have gone this route:

1. Better for the student-athletes as they miss less class time (may not be relevant depending on spring break schedule, but that varies by school) by not having to spend the entire week in Las Vegas.

2. Better for fans as they don't have to spend the entire week there if they want to see their Women's teams play in the opening rounds (only relevant for Wyoming and New Mexico obviously, but still).

3. Better for the MWC. It has to be more expensive to operate an event in the T&M than in Cox. Plus, it's a better environment for some of the sparsely attended opening round games.

It wouldn't be that hard to adjust things logistically to ensure that the same school is not playing at the same time in both Men's and Women's.
