Wyoming vs CBU Report

After the NDI duals Wyoming had to turn around and head out to Riverside, CA to face an up and coming Cal Baptist (CBU) team. I really thought Wyoming had a shot at shutting out them out but we saw some inconstancies and guys unable to close out matches. Wyoming would pull away late with a 28-12 victory with murders row (84-HWT) scoring 16 points all in the first period.

The Good
Sefton Douglass continues to wrestle well; he gave up a takedown on his own shot but immediately turned into Cooper Shore and secure the pin. His confidence must be growing. Luke Willochel made his debut at 133 against a ranked wrestler. He was up 15-3 but just kind of stopped and escaped with a 17-13 win. It was his debut so a good experience for Luke. Eddie, Joey, and Carroll wasted ZERO time in their matches and were absolutely relentless on attacks. Carroll hit a super duck that CBU may have reacted to this morning it was so quick. For those of you that have seen Happy Gilmore there is a scene where a heckler is paid to get in Happy's head. Some CBU fans were giving Joey the business and after his pin he quieted the crowd and that elicited a response. He wrestles way different when fans poke at him, so I guess we need to raise money and hire some hecklers!

The Bad
Unable to close out matches with bonus points. Guys were in position to win big but got sloppy and with CKLV and PSU coming up they will need to clean that up. CBU actually looked better late in matches which should never be the case against Wyoming. Take them to the deep end for 7 minutes.

The Ugly
149-165. You have two seniors here that need to be the heart and soul with young guys bracketing them in the lineup. Gabe was up 12-3 and ended up losing 17-15 while Jared never really pressed and would lose 5-4. These type of loses could sneak up on them in March when RPIs come out OR they use these matches to go out and attack after wrestling matches they knew were below their capability. Sloan wrestled tight and might still be getting used to the 165 weight. It happens so not too concerned unless it turns into a pattern which I suspect it will not. Coach Branch and Coach Ford faces told the whole story during this stretch.

Turning Point
Riley Davis took the mat after Wyoming had lost 4 straight matches. He came out and wrestled a great match with awesome positioning. Though the win was only 7-3 it sparked the boys; it is clear this team is close and they feed off each other. When they have lull's it seems to affect the team, but one guy winning or dominating it sparks them; Eddie "Captain Insano" Neitenbach showed no mercy and it compounded to Joey and Carrol. Kudos to Riley for not pressing and staying with himself to get the boys back on track

Younes Open
A few of the boys headed out to Kearney. Isiah Harrison took 3rd at 125 while Tucker Bowen had to MFOR out. Saenz won the title at 133 while Phelps took 5th. Avila and Brooks faced off for the 149 title with Brooks coming away with a 5-1 victory. Farrer took 4th after losing to the guy he beat earlier in the day. Henry lost in his second match at 197 but worked his way back through the consi's to come away with a 3rd place finish.

What's next
The boys get to enjoy Thanksgiving week before heading out to Vegas for the CKLV (Dec 5-6) followed by the Penn State visit (Dec 13). Make sure you buy your tickets here https://gowyo.evenue.net/events/WRSINGLE

Have a blessed holiday week with family and friends!
