Wyoming vs UVU Dual

Wyoming returned to the mat in Orem last night against a very good Utah Valley (UVU) team. UVU beat Stanford earlier in the year and was coming off a strong Southern Scuffle showing, were as, Wyoming was coming off a ho hum showing at the Solider Salute. At the Soldier Salute Wyoming looked exactly like a team that had a month off of competition and the high of the Penn State dual. I was nervous about this dual, but two True Freshmen making debuts ignited and led the team to a dominating dual win.

The dual started at 157; my guess is UVU was confident in their lighter weights and if they could weather Wyoming’s storm then they could shift the tides later int he dual. Wins by Hill (157) and Davis (174) gave Wyoming a slight 6-3 advantage heading into the murders row for UW. Eddie got out to a quick 7-0 lead but only won 8-1; coaches won’t be happy with that, but a win is a win. UVU sent out their back-up at 197, and Wyoming sent out their True Freshmen, Gunner Henry. Gunner wrestled like a man on fire and was relentless on the outside single; halfway through the second period UVU was gassed. Gunner scored a last second takedown to secure the tech fall. Gunner facing Eddie and Joey daily in the room must be tough for him but has clearly paid off. Joey earned a night off and hopefully was practicing his short game so he could beat Coach Ford in golf this summer.

The tape on Caroll is to attack early and often to get him of his game, however, Carroll came away with a MD. This did not look like a typical Carroll match as he looked tired early but found a way to pull away late for the bonus point victory. 125-149 I was concerned that UVU could make a run at the dual, but Isaiah Harrison kept attacking Bridger Ricks and scored a TD with under 10 seconds left to secure the victory 6-4. This was impressive as Isaiah kept the pressure and even got a stall point on a very good Ricks.

Luke Willochel showed the same moxy his brother has in the dramatics. Down 5-3 in the 3rd Luke secured a bow and arrow and four points of near fall to come away with the victory. Alden kept it close with Drury, but Drury top game was too much to overcome and would win 5-0. Gabe Willochel was not going to let the night end without fireworks and would defeat the #10 wrestler via tech fall 16-1. Gabe looked smooth and relaxed in that match in his attacks and counters; Adam Engel (WyoSports) had a good article on Gabe yesterday.

A solid 29-6 dual victory on the road was what the doctor ordered! Thank you to the Wyoming fans for showing up and there was a lot of Brown and Gold in the stands. Also, the announcers on the FREE stream were great!

Wyoming heads home, finally, Jan 18 (1pm) for a tough dual against #8 SDSU. Wyoming fans creating an atmosphere in the UniWyo would go a long way!
