Wyoming to open 2015 with North Dakota

I protest!!

Hate teams that use us American Indians as (pet animals) mascots.    !

I'd pull my monetary support for that. I've done it before.

A cousin of mine pulled his monetary support for Texas Tech for playing North Dakota in 2009.

I say find a different team to play. There are numerous FCS teams to do business with.

If I lived up there I'd be in a face to face meeting with that AD very soon.

It's one of my strong political beliefs. I'm very against it just like I'm against xxxxxxxxxxxx and other things.

i apologize for the post i had b4, for those who saw it. lol

i just got home, and ppl on the road get me in a bad mood lol

ppl need to lighten up and get over it. what about FSU? the noles? ppl will be more aware of ppl of that descent. its not discriminating at all... get ur panties outta ur pu2213

It's hard to get over being racially attacked throughout your life. What about FSU? I'm against all of them specifically for that reason. That's why I can't support San Diego State for example. I know many Seminoles. None of them grew up say "GOOOOO" or tomahawk chopping in their daily lives. I don't say "UG" for hello or call a head a ""coco". "Sorry me heep smack 'em on coco."

Not only has my American Indian culture taught me why human races are not mascots but so too has the old (pre-christian) history of my European heritage. And those lessons are included in my studies that led to my phd. I've written a book about it. But I have not tried to have it published. I wrote it for the young people in my family and tribal family who want to learn about our culture. It's important for the medicine persons-to-be to have that knowledge.
If you were a student in one of my courses you'd get the lessons of the many reasons why human races are not mascots.
One reason is because the mascot is a skinwalker. A skinwalker is made by killing that which you want to become. If you want to become a tiger then you kill the tiger after certain ceremonies and prepare it's hide to wear so that you magickally or medicine wise become the tiger. Doing that to a human is bad magick or medicine. It's illegal too. Serial killer Ed Gein became a woman by murdering them and wearing their skins. (Psycho movie based on him). It's wearing a costume and it's not balanced to treat humans that way for many reasons.
And it doesn't happen to Black people because they have power to stop it. Example: Cleveland baseball logo would be changed quickly if you make it a black faced logo because it would be an offensive sambo.

I wrote a fat book on this stuff. There are numerous real reasons why........

And it does not really teach about our descent by teaching incorrect behaviours of us.
When speaking to young children about my culture many told me that I could not be Indian because they are all dead by murder and are just people in history books. Some said that we were just cartoon characters or team mascots because of the years of discrimination. I fluently speak a language that there are fewer than 100 speakers known today because of discrimination throughout the years.

You can youtube Wichita Language. The Channel is AlJazeeraEnglish. It shows Doris Lamar McClemore. She is 1/2 Wichita. She is the last fluent speaker of Wichita because of years of discrimination that led up to it being that way. But it is no reason to call a team the Wichitas, a people, because the name Wichita belongs to them and no one else. Doris is a beautiful person.

And you shouldn't ever say pussy to me again. I don't get treated that way and refuse to be. (Said calmly without anger).

Did I miss something, or does my reading comprehension suck?

Anyway. Back on topic (somewhat). Can UW ever once NOT schedule a home game on Labor Day weekend? It has so many disadvantages...and don't give me that "nice weather" horseshit, because the Weber game was cold as hell.

I want to go out of town / Wyoming on Labor day. Make a decent road game to somewhere in the sun, and I am there.

We open the 2012 season at Texas where it'll be 95 degrees and humid as hell!!!

I am there in a second, if it holds true. I have heard that game may be moved "back" 2 weeks in the season...don't remember who / where said it. Was supposedly to accomodate Texas I guess. Anyone else hear the same?

Oh, and 95 and humid = hot Texas bitches + white T shirts + cold beer

There are tons of mascots involving groups of people. Tons. Cowboys, 49ers, Colonials, Mountaineers, Cornhuskers, Spartans, Trojans, Fightin' Irish, etc. These aren't "pet animals", they are symbolic. I can guarantee you that a University does not choose a nickname that they view brings a negative connotation behind it, they choose it because it represents them in a positive way. Strength, bravery, unity are words that come to mind when I think about the history of our Native Americans and those are things I would want to be represented in my school.

I can totally understand why the 'Cleveland Indians' could be insulting as they are grouping an entire race into their monicker, or some of the cheers that are done (FSU and Atlanta Braves), but when team mascots are representing specific tribes from a certain area I can't see how it would be offending. There are tons of cowboys in Wyoming, but I don't think they view their profession as being mocked by watching UW play on Saturdays. I also don't see people of Greek descent boycotting USC and Michigan State, or Irish folk rampaging North Bend.

I also find it odd that if someone feels so strongly about this, they would not know about UND and the battle that has been going on concerning the nickname over the past couple of years. Legislation has been involved and it's been quite the ordeal, lawsuits have been going on since 2007.

Just my two cents in a completely irrelevant and displaced conversation.

i'm norweigian and the minnesota vikings don't offend me in the least...except for that my people are represented by such a shitty team

i agree with this, however, my blood curdles every time i hear a team called the "redskins"

I gotta disagree with alyssa here. It's this kind of sensitivity that is ruining this country. It's a slippery slope of political correctness but where does it end? If we get rid of all mascots that could possibly offend anyone there wouldn't be any left. Teams would just be "colors" but then that would offend someone. Let the madness end please! But if that's the case, I don't think SMU should use a mustang because it could offend a horse and until technology shows us how a horse would feel about that mascot, it should no longer be used.

Cowboys have killed, pillaged, stolen, raped women, and done every kind of illegal activity imaginable but yet we keep them as our mascot. I doubt many of the "honest" cowboys have any problem with this. Pretty soon Ole miss won't have anything left to represent the school. Their goofy looking old man mascot was "racist" Ok well most of the buildings on campus look like plantation homes in the old ante bellum style. They should be torn down as well because it represents architecture from a period of time when slavery was allowed. While we are at it the American flag should be banned as well because slavery was legal for a time under this flag.

I'm just so tired of everyone jumping on the PC bandwagon. It's literally going to tear this country apart. I hope a school uses "Dumbass Cracker" with my face on it as their mascot one day and I would happily support it.

If playing sports has taught me one thing, it's that I could care less about race, color, ethnicity, or sexual preference.

The only Native American nickname that boils my blood is Savages and I'm of Germnan, French, Danish, and English decent!!

Thankfully, Southeasstern Oklahoma State was wise to change it's nickname from Savages to Savage Storm (side trivis: Dennis Rodman attended SEOSU). Sadly, several high schools here in Oklahoma STILL use the "Savages" nickname.

Maybe they should just call themselves The Rodmans. That would be one scary mascot!

alyssa,
With all due respect, you sort of pulled the mascot/skinwalker comparison out of your ass. A mascot as far as sports teams are concerned is a symbol of good luck. I'm not 100% sure but I believe no Cowboys were harmed in the making of our sports program. I'd even go out on a limb and guess that no Native Americans have been skinned and their flesh worn by players from the North Dakota teams. When teams are called the Braves or the Indians many people, including Native Americans, consider that as paying homage to their race/ancestors. As Wyokie says, a name like Savage isn't paying homage. It's an insult. The mascot name that is still around with a high profile that surprises me is the Washington Redskins. But with so many politicians supporting them, that name will be around for a long time.

I'm with the majority on this subject. So long as it's not belittling of the tribe or people and it brings them honor and respect so what. I often wonder, what do the Native Americans think about such things? Does it bother them that such and such school has the nickname Braves, or Apaches, or Indians, or Cheifs, or insert whatever Indian connotation you wish? Or is it that somebody with a political agenda is going after these institutions with an axe to grind just like what's happened with taking God out of our everyday life in America, but that's a topic for another time.

I prefer to play an entire FBS schedule. I know the team just has to win the games on the schedule but I guess it's okay if the FCS team is a strong one at the time Wyoming plays them.

And wow! Alyssa is right. You only heard a small portion. She knows things from historical facts and didn't pull any of it out of her ass. That's why she had written a huge book about it because it's not simple and different cultures see things differently. She was mostly sticking to Native Americans letting others fight for themselves. The skinwalking thing is true and is one way to become something else. But it's basically dressing up or calling on the energies of something. Like dressing up as a vampire at Halloween and acting out it's character. So her mustangs have a person who skinwalks by dressing in a mustang costume. Then they have 2 real mustangs and the team's pet shetland. So their energies are called on. I know what she taught me years ago. She taught me what some of my Native American ancestors could not because they had so much stripped from them in the past.
I know she didn't say anything about cowboys for one because she says things like that are professions, not races. A profession is completely different from a human race. People like Alyssa are why Southeastern Oklahoma has made some changes.
She's really mostly a shy person. Recently I saw a couple of her races online and she was painfully shy during the interview after winning a big race. When I would visit her husband who was my friend and has been dead for years now, she would go all the way up to her 4th floor and her dogs would follow and she'd paint or write or sing and just stay out of sight.
Then I just realized today moments ago that yesterday she was wondering if any Wyoming fans had any interest in a good commercial for promoting Wyoming in football because she would pay for it. She's got a lot of money and boosts some teams. It just clicked with me with her rhetorical tactic that she uses. But no one thought it a good idea.
