Wyoming @ SDSU

Don't know what to think from this game. About to be expected. Josh didn't have a good game(or at least a he didn't have a good second half) they did a good job defending him with different athletic defenders. Not many teams can play defense on him like that so not too worried about that going forward. I think some of the young guys got a taste of what the MWC can be like. JJ didn't play well but I think learned a lot last night. Dalton played really well and hope he can keep that up. I think he proved he deserves the playing time he gets.

The rebounding is frusterating but it has been all year so I figured they would kill us on the boards we just have to try to not be killed too bad. I think we will do a better job on Saturday. I don't know what the final tally was but I remember at one point they had like 18 offensive rebounds but only 13 second chance points not good at all but with that many offensice boards it could have been much worse. We are not a good rebounding team and we haven't been all year, hell we got out rebounded more often than not last year too so we shouldn't continue to be suprised every game when we rebound poorly. We just have to stop from getting killed as bad as we did tonight but I don't think many teams we will face are as good at crashing the offensive glass as SDSU is so hopefully we will do better.

Was impressed we were able to battle with them and keep it interesting the second half with Josh only scoring 3 points. We need others to realize they need to step up and take some inititive on offense.

On to Nevada.

That game reminded me of the old Kawhi Leonard years against us. I remember them just pounding us on boards hard back then. Did anyone catch that tip drill sequence on us last night? Shepard threw up some garbage shot off the backboard. Turns out it was as good as an assist. Some other dude leaped in and missed it barely but then stuck back his own miss. Classic SDSU glass domination over us again. This shit has been driving me crazy for years and we've slipped hard this year on paint patrol. Hope it was a wake up call for the squad. They are gonna have to go twice as hard in the paint against those guys just so we get out rebounded by 10 to 12 boards.

JJ didn't have a great game. This was his intro to MEC hoops and he got schooled a bit. I expect he'll have a much better game @ Nev.

Also, can we finally dust off Marshall? If our guards got 5 more rebounds last night that's 5 fewer possessions we we don't have to defend and 5 more opportunities to score. We may have won. We don't really know if he can score any better than Washington and Lieberman, but I know for a fact he'd get more boards. It's asinine that Shyatt will let us get killed on the boards while a good rebounder is sitting on the bench.

There are some things I really like about this team. They shoot well. Yeah, they got off to a cold start, but when you've got shooters, let'em shoot and they'll work out of that.

Viejas is a tough place to play. We lost there last year, without Herndon and Nance by 26. We got down big, but we continued to play hard and started making some shots.

They did a good job on Adams, but the refs didn't do any favors - but that is life on the road.

The biggest issue on the team is in rebounding. They have zero experience in the paint and it shows. You've got to find your guy and put a body on him. They are spending too much time watching the shot and allowing their opponents to slip inside for rebounding position. We should get better as the conference season continues, but you don't learn that overnight.

We see flashes from the young guys. Herndon to open the half. Obviously, he's got talent. If he can be aggressive to the basket, that will open up more mid-range shot opportunities for him. He has a HUGE first step and needs to be more aggressive with his back to basket. He's much more comfortable taking the outside shot - and he can hit that shot, but the more he takes it to the rim, the more defenders will have to respect that and give him the 12 footer.

Naughton. I continue to be impressed by Naughton. He's our best rebounder, but only got 8 minutes last night. Papa Shy needs to find a way to get him 20 minutes. He's a big body and has shown a penchant to finish around the rim. If he gets more minutes, we get more put backs.

Liberman - The best practice player on the team - absolutely the best shooter on the team -- in practice. He's never shown it in a game.

Hayden Dalton. Put 25 pounds on him and he's the next Bill Garnett. The question is how quickly he can bulk up. He's a got a great basketball IQ. he knows where he needs to be, but isn't big enough and strong to enough hold that position.

JJ - He's gonna be a star - just not yet. Inside, outside and flashing down the lane -- he just needs the reps and to build more defensive intensity. He's not playing smart on defense. As his basketball IQ grows, he will blossom. He's getting more minutes than his defensive play merits.

Adams. He wants to win so bad it hurts. He's lost his cool twice late in games and has pressed to much late in games when behind. He's the heart and soul of the team and when he loses it, we completely fall apart. He doesn't look like he's having fun. It's not fun to lose, but it IS fun to play basketball. He needs to get a possession to possession mindset - forget the last trip down the court and just run the offense.

McManaman - He's playing his game. Not much more to get out of him.

Barnes: The 9 minutes he got the other night were 9 minutes too many. He had 2 points, zero rebounds, zero blocks, zero assists. The dude is invisible.

Ok, that was an ugly way to start conference play. Shyatt needs to find the right chemistry ASAP or this year is going to be painful and we won't even make the NIT. Josh can't do it all, and so far, nobody has really stepped up consistently to help the poor guy. Gorski, Washington and Lieberman - one of those three HAS to step up. James is a work in progress and is a great addition to the team, but the other guards have got to make there shots, period. Shyatt needs to pick his five starters for every game like last year and let the team know this is the first team and the rest is the second team. Then he needs to back that up with trusting those five to make good decisions without yanking out a guy because he makes one mistake. Different team this year and it requires a different approach. Also, if we don't get the other sophomore's involved and they can't grow this year, how bad is next year going to be? Go Cowboys!

Very well said CC.

Naughty needs more playing time. Adams is carrying this team and needs help. Dalton needs to play like he did against SDSU, impressive. James needs to realize that at 6ft 7in and some leaping ability, there are guys that can out leap him and he needs to size them up before the game starts so he doesn't get so many blocked shots. Lieberman needs to bring the practice effort to the game, if that happens - we have another shooter to spread the defense and open up the lane for Adams, Naughton, Jason or Dalton. Jason needs to play consistent and Herndon, please crash the boards. The pieces are soooooo close, its up to the Coaches to pull that out of these kids by giving them confidence. Papa Shyatt needs to be more of a father figure this year, unlike last year. These kids are to young and I hate to say it, need a little coddling lol. Cowboy Up Boys!
