Wyoming hopes to solve field-position issues this season

Ethan Wood is finally comfortable as Wyoming’s punter.

Following a standout soccer career at Liberty High School in Colorado Springs, Colorado — during which he kicked all of three field goals for the football team — he first began punting as a freshman in 2013.

Former Cowboys coach Dave Christensen preferred rugby-style punting, where the punter runs to the right for a few moments, allowing the coverage team to sprint downfield, before booting the ball.

Last year, he switched to standard-style punting under the direction of current UW coach Craig Bohl.

“That was a little bit of a change,” Wood said. “I still wasn’t real comfortable with it.”

Now, after using the same punting method for a second straight year, Wood is primed to settle in and give UW’s special teams a boost.

Wow, I didn't realize any of that.

I really like that this coaching staff is focusing on all aspects of the game versus just worrying about how fast they can setup to throw or run the ball. That spread offense of Christensen's could put up some incredible numbers - look at Brett Smiths passing records, and look at the 3 and outs + TOP and you see the good and ugly sides of that.

There are four distinct parts of the game, offense, defense, special teams, and officials. You can control them all with discipline.
