Wyoming Fall Camp 2014

Practice #22 (8/21/2014)

Simpson's hard work pays off as UW rewards him with a scholarship (WyoSports.net)

Late last Friday, Tanner Simpson was walking to practice.

The walk-on wide receiver from Lander didn’t think this day would be any different than the previous ones of fall camp.

But first-year coach Craig Bohl pulled Simpson aside because he had some news for him.

He was going to be put on scholarship.

“I was at a loss for words,” Simpson said earlier this week. “It’s very rewarding for me. It shows kids around the state that if you come and put in the work, there are opportunities at the University of Wyoming for you.

UW fall camp – Day 18

The schedule says Thursday was practice No. 22 of fall camp, but as senior quarterback Sam Stratton led the team break after stretching, he said it was the start of game week preparation for the Aug. 30 opener against Montana.

And, there was some evidence of that as true freshmen quarterbacks Nick Smith and Austin Fort wore No. 10 jerseys — the same as Montana senior quarterback Jordan Johnson.

Either way, UW practiced in shoulder pads and shorts in War Memorial Stadium.

Notes and Quotes: Wyoming fall camp practice No. 22

Wyoming worked on 3rd and long situations early in practice, and redshirt senior quarterback Colby Kirkegaard looked sharp yet again.

By my count, Kirkegaard completed 6 of 8 passes. The highlight was a beautiful deep out that he dropped into senior wide receiver Jalen Claiborne's hands just as he was going out of bounds.

In the least few weeks of practice, Kirkegaard has been extremely accurate, likely a product of his growing confidence and comfort in the offense.

One repeated target was senior tight end J.D. Krill, who caught multiple passes from Kirkegaard on Thursday. Krill's hands have looked pretty reliable in fall camp, and he could be a surprising part of the passing game this season.

"Nothing better then running stadium stairs late at night after a long mini camp day. Most relaxing part of my day sitting up high after and enjoying the night. #peacefulnight #wyomingnights" (Coach Kenni Burns)

Eddie is such a good kid, he'll be a great representative for WYO at the next level.

Does he ever stop smiling? I bet he's got that grin the whole way through the sack too. It's the last thing the QB sees before closing his eyes as his shoulders hit the turf. Eddie's a beast. Eddie Yarbeast.

Eddie, Eddie, he's the schiznit!!!!!

Good to read that Ethan is back with the team. That will help this young man get through tough times in the past, right now, and in the future.

Support from his teammate's is critical right now. I'm sure they know it and will be there for him. Good call Mc.

"It's great for him to be back. This is part of his family also," Wyoming coach Craig Bohl said after practice. "He had asked to get back in the saddle. One of the best things he can do is get back in a structured environment. We're certainly sensitive to the tragedy in his family.

"It was also good, functionally, to get out there. I thought he was hitting the ball well, so that's encouraging. He needs to work on his flexibility. But he had a smile on his face. I think all of those things are part of the healing process."

Wyoming D-Line adds depth via trim Appleby, Boyland

Two words is all Chase Appleby needed to sum up his transformation.

Last winter, Wyoming's sophomore nose tackle returned for his team's conditioning program weighing a bloated 295 pounds. He was too big, too slow and too quick to tire.

"I was just so out of it," Appleby said. "Football…for a little bit there I didn’t know if that’s what I wanted to do. I was just going to come back and give it one more good go-around, and really commit myself.”

By the time spring practices ended, he was 25 pounds lighter, more like the player who had received multiple scholarship offers -- including one to stay closer to home at Baylor -- as a standout defensive lineman at Centennial High School in Frisco, Texas.
