WYO Rebounding Numbers

If you look at the Wyo page on ESPN, it shows we are 333rd in the country in rebounds per game- this is awful.
But as you all probably know, Wyo isn't truly that bad of a rebounding team. That number is almost inversely proportional to our slowed down tempo.

So I looked at the box scores of the 17 games so far to see how Wyo was doing in the rebounding battle each game.

Of the 17 games, Wyo has won the rebounding battle 10 times, lost it 4 times, and tied 3 times.

10-4-3

In other words, only 4 times have we been out hustled on the glass- and 2 of those times, we only lost the rebound battle by 1.

Games where we lost battle on glass: @SMU (19), vs Montana State (1), UNLV (1), @ CSU (6)
Games where we tied battle on glass: vs CU, vs New Mexico State, @ Montana State

In games we out-rebounded opponent Wyoming has a record of 9-1
In games we tied our opponent in rebounding Wyo has a record of 3-0
In games we got out-rebounded, Wyoming is 3-1

In all games where Wyo either lost the rebound battle by 1, tied for rebounds, or won the rebound battle, Wyo is an impressive 14-1. In games where we got really worked on the glass, Wyo is 1-1.

I think at this point, the SMU game (losing the battle by 19!!!) is the one game where we got truly outplayed.

The rebounding stat on ESPN says we get the 333rd most rebounds per game out of all D1 teams.
It clearly should not be taken as an indication of how well a team actually rebounds.

Not only the slow tempo, but when you are shooting at a high percentage, then there are less rebounding opportunities.

The most accurate gauge of rebounding is rebound % (% of available rebounds). If you look at this stat on KenPom.com (sub required) it shows the following for the Pokes:

Offensive Rebound %: 23.1% (340th in the country)

Offensive Rebound % allowed (aka Def Reb %): 24.9% (9th in the country)

We all know that the Off Reb % is a strategic choice by Shyatt to send everyone back to prevent transition. The defensive rebounding numbers are the difference between last year and this year. Last year we were terrible at both (197th in Def Reb% and dead last in the country in Off Reb % at 351st). This year, we have been very solid on the defensive glass.

Now, these numbers aren't adjusted for SOS, so our defensive rebounding numbers are certainly inflated by all the cupcakes we have played. However, we are a solid defensive rebounding team and our ability to limit SDSU's 2nd chance opportunities will be a key part of the game tomorrow night.

Just watching the game it's obvious that shyatt doesn't stress the offensive rebound........most of the time once a shot is taken all the pokes immediately hustle back onto defense leaving 3 or 4 members of the other team to grab the DR

I've noticed this for a couple of years now, but hell, who am I to question Papa Shy?
