Lights Out in Greely: Wyoming Wrestlers Tuck the Bears in for Hibernation
The Boys rode into Greeley last night and escaped with a 25-10 dual win. Wyoming was without regular starters 157 Jared Hill and HWT Christian Carroll; Carroll seemed a little banged up last weekend so probably worth the rest. Some of the Cowboys got back on the winning track while others let the Bears dictate the match.
Sefton got back into his winning ways with a 3-0 victory; he probably wanted some back swipes but never got the opportunity. Luke Willochell faced the lone ranked wrestler for the Bears, Serrano, and would come up short in a 15-3 loss. Luke didn’t back down and was in on shots, but Serrano was so quick to counter. David Saenz continues to build late season momentum with a tech fall victory.
Gabe Willochell came out and got doubled legged so hard I thought he was going to end up on I-25 ***insert Michael Jordan meme, “I took that personal.” *** Because Gabe immediately turned it into a reversal and back points. Gabe did give up a late reversal looking for the MD victory but a decision victory, nonetheless. Avila filled in at 157 getting the first takedown but couldn’t keep the momentum and would lose 11-4. More dual time will go a long way for Antonio.
These next two matches could have flipped the dual; I thought what UNC did at 165 was bush league. Swan gave up the first takedown and got a quick escape UNC wrestler, Schultz, attacked legs again, but Swan countered and nearly had the takedown when injury time was called. Swan got to start on bottom scoring a reversal and ride out to tie the match 3-3. Late in the third, the match was tied 4-4, and the SAME scenario happened. As soon as Swan was about to complete the takedown, Schultz gave out a scream and got injury time. Swan got to start bottom and get the escape; Schultz who had been limping magically, had all the moves and gas tank to try and score the takedown; Swan would win 5-4. Davis would lose in TB-2 due to riding time; he had his opportunities for takedowns but never seemed to fully commit to his double leg attack, almost like he stopped instead of driving through the attack. UNC wrestler Menke was talking trash to Davis and you could see Davis frustrated and talking back; Riley do not let the strongest muscle between your ears take you out of the match; MD that guy in March!
Eddie and Joey continue their winning ways; Joey had six minutes of riding time in his 10-1 victory. I am not sure if it was intentional by Joey but after his match, he walked towards the UNC bench like he was going to shake hands but circled away from them at the last minute. Love the gamesmanship back. Huge congrats are in order for McBride to get a 1-0 victory at HWT with the Boys on the bench showing their excitement.
Wyoming hosts OU, Sunday at 1pm MT, at the UniWyo for Senior Day. Weather appears to be another mild day if you can make the trip over to Laramie. Six seniors will be honored before the dual...Thank you for being Cowboys.
