Wrestling Report: Wyoming vs Western Wyoming Community College

Good Morning, Wyoming Wrestling Fans, this is a report from Shea Foster.

Wyoming hosted back-to-back NJCAA wrestling champions Western Wyoming Community College for the second year in a row. A couple of years ago Wyoming had a murders row at 165-HWT starting with Branson Ashworth; this year it starts at 125 Volk and runs through HWT.

The dual started at 125 with some back and forth between Sefton Douglass (Wyoming kid) and Jore. Jore had Sefton on a front headlock and bounced his head to a go behind and a three to end the period 3-0. I am unsure if Sefton was trying for a duck under on Jore but somehow Jore disappeared behind Sefton and pulled him to the mat and the pin.

133 Stockton O’Brien (Utah Valley transfer) came in and was again strong on his feet like his match against Campbell. Stockton started gassing out Zach Marrero which would lead to a pin.

141 Brooks is my favorite wrestler to watch on the team because of how he wrestles on his feet and just the attitude he brings to the mat. He wasted no time in taking shots and a takedown. WWCC would try and sit out from bottom and Cole would use a suck back that led to a pin.

149 Willochel (Edinboro Transfer), his style gives me my heart palpitations. He was in quick on a single leg and had it elevated but struggled to get the takedown and started to try and force it which got him in a scramble. At one point in the match, Stafford had an arm bar but Gabe was able to get out of it and start to use his offense and gas tank to get the 15-3 victory. He should have had the TF but the ref did not give him a clear takedown to end the 2nd period which led to a bench warning for Wyoming.

157 Hill (OU transfer) started off slow and gave up an early takedown but was able to score his escape and start to use his offense to set Hixon Canto on his heels. Hill uses something I have not seen much at Wyoming. using a low leg attack but when he gets close, he explodes up into a body lock and it leads to takedowns. He would come away with a 15-5 win.

165 Vorhees, last year he struggled in this dual after getting a big lead he faded late. Last season he started at 157 but made the move to 165 and placed at the Big 12s. After his move to 165 he was 9-5 after being below .500 at 157. This match did not have a lot of action in the first and second period but Cooper would lead 4-1 heading into the third. In the third, he used some turns and a near cradle (rushed it) to cruise to a 17-5 victory.

174 Casey (Thunder Basin grad/AF transfer) would debut for the Pokes. He was in trouble early with Sam May riding out Casey for most of the first period. Seamus clearly had the lungs and started pressing his offense and would score a double leg takedown to take a 4-3 lead heading into the third. Seamus was on bottom and not able to get an escape; I thought we were heading to SV, but Seamus would prove me wrong and get a reversal and ride out for a solid 6-3 victory.

184 McIntosh has been a 165-184 for the Pokes in his career. He looked like a 165 going up against Sam Banks. He was an uneventful first period 0-0. Brett would start on bottom and thought was in trouble but Banks used a cutback so Brett was given his one point; Brett then got a solid escape near the edge of the mat and then attacked right into a takedown to take a 5-0 lead. In the third he would get nearfall and a 12-2 win.

197 Novak is on a mission this year. Dickinson from WWCC couldn’t even breathe or set up anything with Joey attacking and it would lead to a Novak pin.

HWT Zimmer would face off against the #1 JUCO HWT in Lopez. This was a slower-paced HWT match with the 1-1 entering the third. Lopez would have a really good shot on Zimmer, but somehow Kevin was able to scramble out and get his own takedown to win 4-2. Kevin got a solid takedown last week against a returning AA and would like to those attacks.

Wyoming is still without 174 Riley Davis and 184 Ethan Ducca who are returning from injuries last season. With the new redshirt rules, we may see younger guys wrestle until they are healthy again. Wyoming is a very deep team and showed the attack on their feet. We will see them again in action Nov 22/23 as they head to Oklahoma to face OSU and OU.
