Women's Tennis

I'm not a follower of college tennis, but just for the hell of it I pulled up an article on the official Wyoming site about the MWC match between the Pokes and Fresno State.

The Pokes won, but if you look at the scores of the individual matches, one thing really stands out - except for two, the names are virtually unpronouncable - and that's for both teams. So are the colleges trolling Eastern Europe and maybe Africa for players?

Tennis at the college level is one of those sports that has a lot of European/Russian players brought in to play. When I worked at Wisconsin, half of the roster there was from Europe and a good number of the opposing players were foreign as well. Not 100% sure why this is, but if I had to guess I would say it's because in the US any legit tennis players go pro and anyone that isn't good enough moves on to other sports, leaving fewer "college-level" players than there are roster spots.

So meanwhile because it is cheaper to have foreigners play college tennis in laramie than it is to get a baseball team made up from highschool kids around wyoming, we still think it is better to have tennis.
What a joke.

And another thing...people who always want wyoming kids on the football and basketball team should be in full support of a wyoming baseball team and cutting either a golf team or tennis team.

Wyo doesn't have highschool baseball but they do have legion ball and it is pretty competitive.
Hell just a few years ago a kid from Cheyenne was drafted in the 1st round from the NY Mets.

Between Casper, and Cheyenne, and the multiple teams they have Wyo could get a baseball team that could at least compete in the MWC. Not to mention all the other teams throughout the state that have skilled players...Rock Springs, Green River, Evanston, Jackson, Gillette, Cody....

Rant done. But seriously. WYO baseball could be 90%+ wyo players, yet Tennis is what over 50% non-Americans?

Looks like Laramie is about to get pounded with snow again. That's how well baseball works in Wyoming....but you could say the same thing about Colorado this year.

A funny thing about Wyoming baseball....there were three members of the Casper Oilers Legion team in the majors at once (Tom Browning, Mike Devereaux, and Mike Lansing). Not bad for a town the size of Casper.

Baseball is a small town sport, in terms of the athletes that play it.
You rarely see the type of "swag" douchers in baseball that you do in basketball or football.
Think about all the NBA players and NFL players you see who wear different suits to every game that, combined probably cost millions of dollars?
Meanwhile, baseball players seem to be the type of kid from a small town that listen to country music and and work on the ranch with a big ole chew of tobacco in lol.

John Buck on the NY Mets, leading the NL in RBIs, from Kemmerer.
All the players you mentioned from Casper. Brandon Nimmo, maybe 20 years old just drafted out of Cheyenne a few years ago.

I really think if we had the team, legion ball in state would get more competitive as the kids would be trying to earn a scholly. And we could field a full team from instate players.

P.S. 90% Wyoming players? Wyoming had baseball before you know. It was more like 9%...maybe.

So be it. If you pay attention to legion ball throughout the state (I don't know if you do or if you give two shits) but the talent level is pretty decent. Maybe 90% is a bit high but something like 50% could work.

Title 9 sucks. Tennis sucks. Golf sucks.

This would normally be the place I post a pic of the hot foreign tennis players, but beaverpoke doesn't like beaver.

Sorry you don't like me, that doesn't mean you have to instigate and complain and insult.

Title 9 may indeed suck, but UW leadership has no control over that. They must abide by its requirements. That means that if they add Men's baseball, they must add an equivalent number of women's scholarships (typically softball) and they can't take any existing Women's scholarships away (IOW, can't get rid of tennis). In the end that means that adding baseball requires the addition of two sports and their associated expenses.

Oh, and we could have 90% of the Tennis players from Wyoming if we wanted to. Baseball would be no different than Football or Basketball. There would be a constant struggle between the need to win and the desire to recruit more in-state athletes from a state that produces only a small amount of D1 talent. Wyoming produces about 1-2 D1 college baseball players every year (I actually could only find one over the last two years, but I think a few go JC and make it to D1 and other routes). If there was a wealth of baseball talent in Wyoming than the regional schools which offer baseball (Utah, UNC, AFA, Washington State, Creighton, etc.) would be pursuing that talent, but there is only one Wyoming player on any of those rosters (kid from Cheyenne on UNC's roster).

The same factors that prevent Wyoming from producing decent FB talent (sparse population, lack of sports specialization and training, climate, etc.) are the same factors at play in limiting the production of BB talent. I also don't buy the whole "small town sport" thing either. I grew up in Wyoming (I am probably about 10 years older than you) and participation/interest in Football was far higher than in baseball.
