With practice starting what to expect from the new guys?

I'm sure Granberry and Hankerson Jr. will play a ton because both of them are already seasoned veterans.

I'm guessing Trey Washington gets into the line-up at point guard. He's too fast and too good a passer/shooter to keep on the bench. We'll see how good he is at defense and ball security, two things he'll have to have to see the court.

Will Keonta come in and play right off the bat? He looks like he might be one of the most talented high school recruits Wyoming has ever had.

What do you think Wyoming fans? What new guys are going to have an impact this year?

When they were signed, I expected Vernon to be the impact player, but based on what I have heard, it's actually Washington that really has opened eyes. I think they both see some time off the bench this year, but Washington might see more than I had originally anticipated.

Hankerson will step right in as a starter and wouldn't surprise me if he leads the Pokes in minutes this year.

Not sure on Granberry. Obviously you don't bring a guy in for one year to sit, so hopefully he can provide the perimeter threat we need.

Herndon remains a surprising signing. I expect a redshirt.

Thoughts on that, more specifically?

Also - agree on Washington from what I have heard as well. Would like to know more about Granberry as well - the one and done deal has me wondering.

I think Papa Shyatt will motivate like always to help us but i can see us being fast and able to dunk it a bit more often, oh yeah better 3 shooting would be nice too

When I saw Granberry play at half acre this summer I thought he was better than martinez, they play similarly but Granberry could dribble

I know it's early but how's everybody feel about the squad this year???? big, small?? fast, slow?? etc...etc....

Looks like a small squad, but quicker. Our size has definitely gotten better, but we're really green on the front court. Guys like Halderson and Herndon need to get better in a hurry. Right now the only three bigs we've got are Nance, Cook, and Sellers. Vernon is listed as a forward, but he's probably the smallest forward in the conference at 6'5".

I expect Trey Washington to compete for starting time with Josh Adams. I'd love to see Granberry start at the 2 over Grabau. Hankerson I believe is a sure in at the 3 and good for an average of 15-18 points a night. Cooke will compete with Vernon for minutes at the 4 and Nance will start at the 5. I really think a huge key this year will be the development of Haldorsen. He has put on some weight and he is long ad has shown craft around the hoop as well as being able to step outside and hit the occasional 3. We could be a very deep team.

I think this team will be deeper than the past few years. We are slightly undersized but look to be a quick and agile team. I think that the starting 5 will be something like Nance, Cooke, Hankerson, Adams, and Grandberry. I think that Washington, Haldorson, McManaman, Vernon, Sobey, and possibly Sellers all see a lot of time this year as well.

I wonder if they're planning on moving Keonta to SF or if they'll let him try to play in the MWC as an undersized 4? I'm guessing both, but he has a better chance to make the league as a SF.

I'm almost positive Granberry will play early and often and have an impact on the team, They know way too much about him and put too much effort into getting him to just let it slide.

Sporting News predicted Wyoming 7th.....saw that in their magazine while I was at the store.

I expected 7/8 to be the consensus preseason position for the Pokes. Top 4 will be UNM, UNLV, BSU, and SDSU in some order. USU should be 5th. After that it is a bit of a crapshoot and you can mix them up in any number of ways. I expect CSU to get the benefit of the doubt with Eustachy and coming off their best season in over 20 years so they will probably be picked 6th. I think AF/SJSU will be picked 10/11 respectively, leaving WYO/NEV/FSU in the 7-9 spots.

I expect Wyoming to be much improved this year in the land of 3 and don't expect a 7th place finish.

Make the league? Thats looking waaaaaay to far ahead.
I dont see him playing the 3, as they need to be able to shoot a three and after what I heard Shyatt tell him, I dont think he will be taking many of those. jmo.

I completely disagree here with respect to the front court. For they type of grinding defense and rebounding game that Coach Shyatt seems to prefer, we need front lines that look like the Waddell + Washington tandem we had in Year 1 of Part 2.

Looks like a small squad, but quicker.
I hope that we gained quickness when we gave up size. I would also hope that our perimeter players are quicker than Martinez was last year. Although I do not expect the degree of shooting consistency.

It is not really a fair comparison--for anyone--but didn't we have a SF from San Antonio a few years back that was in the 6'5"-215 lb. range? He could certainly rebound with the best of them at that size.

Vernon's size isn't an issue IMO and he will play the 4, not the 3 I assume. There have been quite a few undersized 4's that have had success on the glass (and overall) in the MWC in the last decade. Guys like Keena Young, Wendell White, Pierce Hornung, and of course, Tyson Johnson. All were in the 6'5" to 6'6" range and between 215 and 235 (Tyson was heavier than that when he got to Laramie, but slimmed down a little). Vernon obviously has a long ways to go before he reaches the level of those players, but I think that's the type of role that he can aspire to with this team.

None of those guys mentioned were impact players as underclassmen (3 of them played JC for at least a year), but were eventually able to have a large impact in the league.

Long story short, I expect spot minutes from Vernon this year and will be looking for effort and motor moreso than any significant contribution to the box score.
