Who Is Your Starting Five for Air Force Game?

Ok, here is my starting five for Air Force:

Naughton (He has potential and we need size on the inside)
Herndon (and the minute he doesn't crash the boards, pull him out)
Adams (no surprise here)
James (freshman is playing well enough, but pull him if he gets sloppy with TO's)
McMannem (But pull him if he is ice cold, like today or is sloppy)

Off the bench:

Dalton
Moemeka
Gorski
Lieberman
Morris

Sit for most of the game:

Barnes
Washington III

You would pull Moemeka's redshirt???? You lost me there for sure.

I agree with the exception of Moemeka. There isn't a scenario imaginable where I pull his redshirt this season.

That's def the starting 5 we need to run with Dave. As the others have said no way Moemeka should play. I know your low on TW3 but I see him ahead of both Lieberman and MoMarsh at this point. MoMarsh can't even earn PT, I'm not sold on him until that happens. There's no way that guy is just shredding everyone in practice and they just won't use him for some reason. He's a internet board hype guy until he proves us wrong. So far he hasn't even earned that shot.

Guys, my bad with respect to Moemeka - senior moment and a lapse on the redshirt.

Also, my apologies regarding Trey - his hearts in the right spot, but him and Lieberman need to step it up. Trey is a redshirt Junior and Lieberman a true sophomore. These guys know the Shyatt way and need to take charge when they are on the floor and quit looking for Josh to take the lead. Man up, Cowboy up - don't ask for permission to lead just lead and Papa Shyatt will be happy. Sure, he may fly off the handle and yell like he does at times, but if you MAKE YOUR SHOTS he will quit yelling. You don't see him yelling at James because the kid has confidence and swagger, just a little raw the moment.

No need to apologize for your opinion. I'm glad we have a new poster on the board with another perspective. I feel you on those guys too. I want more out of both of em but this is our team this year and most likely for years to come. I still think Trey deserves PT over other guys that we have...maybe not over Gorski. He has made some TO's that have hurt and that play he didn't run back on against Nevada hurt us too. I do think he'll learn from all this stuff. Lieberman I'm just not sure about. He's a steady hand but kinda bland. I'm just way down on JB right now. He clearly needs another year or maybe 2 to get to MWC level play. I'm so ready for a starting 5 shakeup. It's time to feed more minutes to our best 8 I'd say.

I'm confused on Liebs. From what I saw from his playing time in that Maccabees tourney thing he was putting up anywhere from 8 to 20+ points a game. And was shooting well too. Then in a Cowboy uni he is lackluster and shys away from shooting. If he is such a "pure" shooter like Shyatt and co have said then why the vast difference?
Marshall has been a question mark since the beginning. He looked good in JUCO, and he has done decent during garbage time on O but I have seen him run around lost on the D side. I guess the coaches know best. And with what Shyatt has done since being here, I'd say he's earned my trust in knowing how to manage his team. I mean he does have one of the youngest teams in the nation competing in EVERY game. I've only seen a couple of "young team" let downs this year (Ind St., Southern, Marshall). But this team has taken several good teams to the wire(Houston, Cal, Nevada, SDSU). And even won a few of those (NMSU, Denver).
A good team generally needs four key contributors. We have three ( Adams, McM, James) all guards. We're missing that fourth (a key big), and each one that has played has shown signs of what they could be, but they don't do it regularly, which is why we see Shyatt still dividing time with Herndon, Dalton, Naughton and Barnes. When one of them finally steps up and becomes that regular contributor we will see more winning, until then, we will continue to lose close to moderately close games.

i agree with what's been said, Trey although i thought was coming along nicely, he's totally disappeared which is too bad, thought the redshirt woulda taught him stuff, but until Josh is gone he won't be much of a factor

I expect them to go smaller against AF. Don't have the bruisers inside that SDSU and Nevada had so my starting lineup would be

Herndon
James
McM
Adams
TW3/Gorski/Liebs

I would probably start TW3 as he is more of a point guard and I don't like Josh having to run the point all the time(anything to keep him from wearing down even a lil bit) and I would take Trey over Liebs. I still have high hopes for Trey but he needs to step up. I've seen some flashes but is still lacking the confidence needed.
I also agree that Naughton deserves more time than JB at this point(the beginning of the second half at Nevada was one of the worst stretches of basketball I've seen from one player) but I don't know if I am ready to start Naughton just bring him of the bench when we want to go larger.

A quick counter point. If AF is small should we try to go big on them and be the imposing team once this season? Say we go this 5

Adams
James
McMan
Herndon
Naughton

Herndon and Naughton are fairly mobile bigs. Herndon especially can move around to cover the AF perimeter game and if we double up on bigs we get that one extra guy to swat backdoor action. With that lineup you'd expect us to own the boards for once. On offense it still gives us spread capability and more importantly maybe we could actually go for offensive boards for once in our goddamn life. This gives us the luxury of transitioning to a small ball lineup with our bench. Using Gorski, Trey, Dalton, and Liebs as our next 4.

I'd start:

Adams
MCM
James
Herndon
Naughton

with Marshall as my sixth man

Washington
Gorski
Dalton
Lieberman
Barns

We need to beat the hell out of AF. We owe them one after last year. Last year's AF game caused me great distress.

Air Force plays similar to Denver. For Denver the starting 5 were:

Herndon
Aka G
Lieberman
Adams
McManimal

In addition 154 of the 200 minutes of that game were played by this group as well. I think that with a few more games under the belt since the Denver game you swap Lieberman with James.

I don't think that Dalton or Barns has the defensive discipline to earn any meaningful minutes.

I would start

Herndon
Aka G
James
Adams
McManimal

Bring in Trey and Lieberman off the Bench and bring in the big guys if we are playing some sort of zone coverage.

Big game to protect home court. GO POKES!

Obviously Adams and McM deserve and have earned spots as starters.

Imo the guys that deserve a chance to play extended minutes are James, gorski, and noughton. (Herndon is still maybe the 3rd best player but hasn't shown to "deserve" any specific position/role yet)

Herndon has been most successful as a cowboy as the 3rd big.

Roll with this lineup to see if any of the 3 new starters take a big step forward or if Herndon/Barnes fight their way back into the SL

Adams
Gorski
McM
James
Noughton

6th man Herndon (and wishfully thinking Marshall)

This thing imo is still about settling into roles. Need to find out if James/gorski/noughton thrive in a starter role.

That's a really interesting idea actually. I'm pretty much on board with any starting 5 that has Naughton in it. It's hard for me 2 want Herndon out of the starting 5 but if it put more fire in his belly it could pay off. I was kind of thinking how cool is it if 2 of our starters turn out to be freshmen this year! That's really solid recruiting gets on Naughton/James, plus we have redshirts on Conway/Moemeka!! I mean next year we could be really awesome....lot of naysayers around here about that but that's a little OT. Why so high on Marshall fellas??? Are you high on something else?

Did you see Marshall whiff on that windmill jam at the end of the Southern game? Even though he missed it it was impressive. The only people that could have done a dunk like that are Adams and maybe James. Marshall reeks of athleticism. I want to see more!!
