Where are we now?

Board's been pretty quiet of late, which surprises me some since so many of us were so upset with Heath. Are we just that apathetic this season?

I think Burman made the right move, and it seems obvious to me that the team is playing with much more intensity and fire. M'Baye looks like a different player, and we've seen some good play from Hudson, Harrison and Bouedo. Still making a lot of mistakes, but what do you expect from a team that doesn't seem to have improved over the course of the season?

So, the question remains, where do we stand now? We get a new coach soon. Will he be able to retain the current players? Do we want them all to stay? Have their been any inklings of guys looking to transfer? Seems to me that with a coach who can teach fundamentals (i.e. defense) we have a pretty good nucleus to work with. A healthy Muojeke and Waddell, with Jackson, M'Baye and maybe Cruz or Washington would be a good start if they could add a point guard. Of course, coaching is a necessity that has been sorely lacking.

Anyway, what do we all think? Just trying to get some discussion going on a very quiet board.

Schmoldt is apparently going to have some news this afternoon about the WY coaching search. That should be good for some internet fodder. The Pokes seem to be playing better lately.. there's a lot less negativity around the program now, and it seems the players are responding to that. Many people said the firing of Schroyer was poor timing.. they're entitled to their opinion but things were going to get much worse if he wasn't let go.. at least now the program can start to heal and look toward better days.
 
I think we're just waiting to see what new coach comes in, and to see how the players do without Schroyer.

As for the players, they seem to be having fun now, now that they're not being hounded for every little thing, actually rotating with others on the bench, and they're playing a lot harder now then they have all year. Turnovers and freethrows are still a problem, but that should change with a new coach.

From a roster perspective,the priority will be keeping Jackson and Mbaye. They are both sophomores with a redshirt year available so they would be highly sought after as transfers.

A lot of the other guys don't have enough eligibility left to justify a transfer (Luster, Waddell, Muojeke, Cruz, Martinez, Bouedo, Washington) or are less proven prospects at this point (Harrison, Hudson, Gibson).

It seems inevitable that there will be some type of attrition with a coaching change, but I do hope the new staff can keep the nucleus.

If everybody returns, then I think the recruiting focus would be on a JC PG. Hard to land a lot of HS talent in the spring signing period and JC big men are notoriously over-recruited, but quality JC guards are typically available in the spring. Adding a quality PG with perimeter shooting ability combined with the returning nucleus could provide a solid roster to work with.
 
I was disappointed to learn that a search firm had been hired. That sounds like we are going the assistant route again. I don't think you need a search firm to go after Gilespie or Shyatt or some other head coach. If we go the assistant route again, expectations will be lowered. We've heard it all before: "the program was in disarray, we have to give him 4 years to rebuild". We wouldn't hear that with a Gilespie.

Anyway, the guys are playing hard. I just don't think there is much there. M'Baye has turned it up a notch or 2. But there really isn't much there to scare anyone in this league. I've already booked my ticket to Vegas but I don't get there until the morning of the semi-finals. I don' t think the men will be playing by then.

I agree to a certain extent, but I heard that this is the same search firm that Kentucky to used to hire Gillespie. So if they already have a relationship with him, it may make the process easier. As long as Burman actually uses the search firm to find the best candidate, I think I'm ok with it.

And as for the rebuilding process, I think we've got to give any coach some time - but we should see improvement every year (look at CSU). A guy like Gillespie would be able to take the current guys and turn them into something pretty quick... at least that's my :twocents:

With the way Jackson has been acting. Missing practices, never smiling, always complaining. I wouldn't be surprised if he transfers by the end of the year.
