What are people's thoughts after seeing/hearing the Pokes in action last night? I know it's difficult to make too many meaningful observations from a couple exhibition games and a single OOC game against a weak opponent, but here are my initial thoughts on this team:

- This team isn't all that different from last year's team. We are still going to be an offensively challenged basketball team. They are going to be frustrating to watch when they go on those long scoring droughts.

- Our defense has likely taken a small step backwards, especially our perimeter defense. However, Shyatt has put so much emphasis on defense that we will still have a good enough defense to keep us hanging around in most games. Teams with truly elite talent won't have too much trouble scoring against this group though.

- Our depth is still very poor. Josh Adams has freaky athleticism, but that doesn't necessarily make for a great basketball player. He is still too raw to make much of a consistent impact this season. I expect him to have a few good games, but he won't be an impact player this season. McManamen is a player with great fundamentals and is a solid player, but not someone who can take over a game. As an illustration, our bench contributed 5 points last night on 1-14 shooting.

Thought?
I agree mostly. My observations are that this team will get better as the season progresses (most everyone else as well) but will not challenge for the top four spots in the MWC this year. Too much youth in key positions, no single player that can take over a game like Cruz was able to, and a lack of interior penetration. Hard-nose, Shyatt style Defense and perimeter shooting will keep us competitive, much like last season.

If they do start to pick up the pace, expect more transitional points but when you slow it down on offense there isn't as much opportunity for that style. We need consistent production from Nance and Washington almost every game as Sellers is likely a bust. Not sure about the recruiting acumen on this one. Would be a decent D-II player, maybe.

In general though, I think Shyatt's teams will progressively get better with each game and each season, but probably not as fast as some would like. Think Fischer in his first few years at SDSU. For now I'll enjoy watching these kids play with emotion, unselfishness, and a hard core work ethic.

Main area of concern: The bench was a combined 1-13 from the field last night. Our offense was relied solely on the starters. Also Bench: 3-7 free throws. Both of these needs work.
It may have been a cold night or first game jitters, but, definitely needs work. I was however impressed with our bench rebounding. Cooke and Haldorson both with four rebounds.

I would start the Aussie at the 2 honestly. I think he is the most true 2 guard we have, he handles the ball well, gets to the rim, and seems like a good athelte. He cut his hand in practice, may make a difference why he didn't play much. I like his game
