Unfortunately we all know with the loss of the Mtn Network we will have far less games televised and I will be streaming even less than ever before as I don't get access to any of those channels in Arizona. I might get DirecTV during the Basketball season just so I have a chance to watch my Pokes. I'll be streaming audio all season long that is one thing you can always count on.

Were not really expected to be much if any better than last year so it will be good to see how it turns out.

Starting Line up

Gilmore, Grabau, Martinez, Nance, Washington!

I see this as an interesting starting line up I certainly didn't expect to see Gilmore and Grabau in at the same time.

I actually thought this would be the line up tonight, I think Adams is better off coming off the bench this year since he can provide an immediate spark. I think this provides us two good ball handlers and Grabau is a solid player while nothing special, he is pretty solid, once Sobey is healthy and gets his practice time up I expect him to be starting in his place.

Only thing that worried me about Grabau last season was his speed was lacking, He could beat anyone off the dribble which caused pressure issues. We'll see how it goes, Cowboys have come out ice cold so let's see how the defense holds up.

I agree his speed is lacking which is why Sobey will probably take over for him when he is ready to go. However, I like his ball handling and he is a solid shooter and a good player on D so I like him starting for now until Sobey is ready, Adams off the bench can provide that immediate spark to the team so I like him there instead of starting.

This might be the ugliest group of cheerleaders I have ever seen.

You at the game on your phone or is this game televised in Wyo?
At the game. I just got flipped off by a fellow student in the student section for standing during the game.

I believe the "A" team was at the football game.
They don't usually send cheerleaders to away games unless driving distance.

are you sure?
Unless it changed this season then yes. Only other time they get to go is for bowl/tourney or if a donor pays.

How fast was Brett McFall? Could he burn by people and 360 dunk? Riley shares a lot of the same qualities as Brett: smart, he's a passer, he's a shooter, and he has a low assist to turnover ratio.

I wished Shy would give Riley more minutes last year. I'm glad he's getting them now. He's a heady player that can shoot. His passing ability is second to none. I don't know if you're following the recruiting profile for point guards at Wyoming under Larry. They can all shoot, they can all pass, and their minutes are determined by assist/turnover ratio.

i love all the talk for grabau like everyone was just DYING to see him start.... hmm....

Grabau is a solid player and all but I am very surprised that he started! McManamen and Adams are both better.
Grabau starting will not be a normal thing this season. But congrats to him, he's started more games for a d1 team than I have!

Last night showed that Gilmore is much better and going to be much better than JD last year
Everyone loved the HARD d (myself included) but having a scoring point guard is awesome!

Now lets go back to talking how we only win 17 more times this year........

I'm surprised he started as well, I take nothing away from his ability to play but when JD was out last year with fouls Grabau just put himself in some bad situations with his lack of speed and awareness.

I'm not sure how you say Gilmore is much better than JD last year. I think you mean much better than JD before Shyatt but in no way did one game show he was better than JD last year. Gilmore had 4 assists and 1 TO last night. JD had an entire season of Nationally ranked assist to turn over ratio.

Can Gilmore score yes he has proven he can shoot and our out put proved that we are not doomed to be a 60 point team anything over it we lose this season. We started very slow and then turned it on in the 2nd half. Last night in my eyes proved the defense is still there, we actually have some bench depth not a ton but more than we have had in recent years and we can score.

I take nothing from Gilmore but by no means do I say after one game he is better than JD that's just ignorance talking imo.

Think our defense will be top 5 like it was last year?

Please ask again at the end of the month. Seriously hard to tell after 2 ex games and that game last night. We don't have any stellar competition in this month of November but we will get a better feeling of what the team can do. for Example the next few games we have.

NCCU averaged 70.7 PPG last season, USD averaged 70.8, SOU averaged 60.6, UNC averaged 72.4, CSUB averaged 68.4, UCSB averaged 73.0 & We averaged 62.7 We face 5 teams this season in the first month of play that all average more PPG than we did.

Last season we beat Western St 78-39 and UNC 75-56 so this season we started a little colder and we like them score just a little more. Will that make a difference? Who knows but we need to see how the month of November goes before we will even be able to tell if we have a defense. Do we have a defense? Sure is it as strong as last years? No I don't think it is.

If it turns out to be I'll be the first to admit I was wrong!

Adams and McManaman are more talented than Grabau yes. However, Adams is better suited to come off the bench and not to start he makes too many mistakes and is too raw to be a starter, but he provides a great spark off the bench and will become a great player. Also McManaman is a SF and he won't be starting over Martinez anytime soon the only real option we have is Sobey and he didn't even play much last night. Grabau is a very solid shooter, defender and handles the ball well, plus he has a great assist to turnover ratio which is what Shyatt wants out of his guards. Is he the most talented guy, no but he is our best option to start at the two guard for now.

What are people's thoughts after seeing/hearing the Pokes in action last night? I know it's difficult to make too many meaningful observations from a couple exhibition games and a single OOC game against a weak opponent, but here are my initial thoughts on this team:

- This team isn't all that different from last year's team. We are still going to be an offensively challenged basketball team. They are going to be frustrating to watch when they go on those long scoring droughts.

- Our defense has likely taken a small step backwards, especially our perimeter defense. However, Shyatt has put so much emphasis on defense that we will still have a good enough defense to keep us hanging around in most games. Teams with truly elite talent won't have too much trouble scoring against this group though.

- Our depth is still very poor. Josh Adams has freaky athleticism, but that doesn't necessarily make for a great basketball player. He is still too raw to make much of a consistent impact this season. I expect him to have a few good games, but he won't be an impact player this season. McManamen is a player with great fundamentals and is a solid player, but not someone who can take over a game. As an illustration, our bench contributed 5 points last night on 1-14 shooting.

Thought?

I think our bench has a little more depth to it that can shoot and should help keep us from going on those long streaks. I still think 1 game doesn't do justice for what the bench can do and we started really cold missing everything.

I still think Basketball team will out perform last years football team in excitement. To me that is a huge step in the right direction.
