Week 1: ASU

Here we are - back in the saddle for the 2024 football season. First up, Arizona State.

I am nervous. Skattebo is a load and extremely versatile. We don't know much about them, considering the number of transfers they added. We know the OC - and have had success against his system in the past. To me, it comes down to the trenches and our ability to tackle well in space.

I have absolutely no idea what to expect. No clue how this game is actually going to go. I do know that if we are a good enough team to challenge for a MWC championship this year, we leave Tempe with a win.

I'm just excited to finally see what we have. Can Svoboda come anywhere close to being "the next Josh Allen"? Is Sawvel any good at being a head coach? Is the new OC actually going to improve our offense in his first year? Do we finally have a playmaking wide receiver that can attract double coverage and still make plays down the field?

If the answer to most of those questions is "yes", then we are about to have one of the best seasons in a very, very long time. If the answers are mostly "no", then it will be another disappointing season and we can all start discussing if Svoboda should be benched for the freshman, if Sawvel needs fired, and if the OC is an idiot or not. Either way, it is finally time for this team to put up or shut up. I, for one, am ready.

Arizona State had a more offensive offense than we did last season. They've completely retooled, so anyone that says they have an idea of what they're going to roll out is lying.

As TheRealUW said, if this is going to be a championship caliber team they must leave with a W. I fully believe that our defense is going to be nasty. Like most of you I'm more worried about if we'll actually be able to score points on offense. Seeing the competent passing game we've all been begging for the past 5 years would be amazing. Seeing a cohesive, balanced offense would be even better.

I have high expectations. Pokes 28, scum devils 10.

I’m worried about playing a Big 12 team on the road with a new qb and coach. I hope my worries are futile. I’ll be there on Saturday night cheering loudly. Go Pokes!

History tells us that Wyo. on the road vs. P5 opponents is a certain loss. However, I will not bet against us even though I am tempted. It's going to be 108 degrees in Tempe this Sat.. Not sure there is a way to prepare for that.

I really wish we had Harrison. App St highlights came across my Youtube feed and that 75yd TD after the pick 6 saved our ass. Homerun hitter. I'm cautiously optimistic about Jones and on paper look better at RB than we did last year when we started without Harrison. Definitely think we can do some things with Scott. If the passing game has improved with no drop off in the running game, that should equate to about 75-100yds more per game. With our D, that SHOULD result in a pretty good season. Football is funny and the football gods even more so.

Exciting times we live in. New coaches everywhere, and a lot of returners to help stabilize the ship. I'm really looking forward to the potential of an upgraded offense and whether or not it exists with this team. If it does, this could be a wonderful year! Hoping the Defense travels and the Pokes roll...the last 10 years have caused me to cautiously optimistic. Would love to see a HUGE opening win rather than historical performances on the road. I really want this team to have a stellar year, and having a hard time containing my excitement. We will be there, rocking the Brown and Gold and cheering on our Pokes either way!

I know I'm biased but one of the more intriguing games this weekend. If Svoboda is the generational talent, POKES should take this one. We've been screaming about an offensive adjustment. Time to see if the little league coaches knew something or old Bohlly knew something. Jr has no excuse for a setback on D, so keeping them under 28 shouldn't be out of the realm of possibility. Can Jr keep them under 20? Can the offense score 20+? So hard to have much of an indication with closed camps on the WYO side and all the transfers on the asu side.

Looking forward to this one.

Roster stability versus transfer portal make a team. This game is really intriguing from the perspective of what is the more effective approach to building a good team.

Svoboda started and played the entire game in Austin last year. First game Big 12 road jitters should not be there.

My concern is cramping and exhaustion. How do prepare for that kind of heat practicing in Laramie?

Same way ASU will. Consistent hydration this entire week and alternating water and liquid electrolytes during the entire length of the game. Get stretched at halftime.

If our trainers don't know how to keep our athletes from becoming dehydrated in warm weather, then I have to question their credentials.

We cannot let weather become a factor in this game. We can't control what the weather will be. If we lose, it will be because ASU is the better team...and that will be extremely disappointing. I truly believe we have the better team - we need to win this game.

For Svoboda, prepare the same way you did in high school...after all, he played in the heat there for years.

I was slightly concerned maybe even worried but if their offensive coordinator calls plays even remotely close to how he called them in Laramie I feel far less concerned.

Good point.

I was thinking more along the lines of Bertagnole and the big boys.
Such a fine line between having the "oh god it's hot" stuck in your teams head (like we use altitude in Laramie), and playing properly hydrated without making it a big deal. I see people running around Scottsdale / Tempe in the summer heat all the time, it isn't THAT bad...

Yep. I golf at least twice a week in Tempe/Phoenix. It’s hot but not hot enough to keep me from playing.

Humans are a tropical species. Adapted to live in the hot, hot weather with our naked, hairless bodies
