Walk ons

Wyoming kids already get a free ride with the Hathaway and for Colorado kids our tuition is cheaper than just about anything in their state. Walk on is a free shot for the team to maybe find a diamond in the rough.

That's the point - need to sign a ton to replace all the ones that are gone. Most walk-ons will stay for only one year or less. That's OK, though. I'll never fault any walk-on for quitting. So much time and effort for a shot at maybe playing a little bit. It's probably pretty obvious after one year if you have a good shot at being a contributor .

Bohl is trying to establish a solid walk on program. He has only been head coach for two years, but last year we started the season with two walk-ons starting in the defensive backfield. Of course there will be attrition, but there will also be guys who stick in out. Just looking at the list, I'd guess 4 or 5 of next years walk-ons will see some PT at some point during their time in Laramie. My early guess would be Henderson, Dickson, Leppke, and Thatcher.

This couldn't be further from the truth. My son was a hathaway kid and it still cost me $14,000 for his freshman year as a walk-on.

Wasn't that cost from room and board rather than tuition, though?
It's only been a dozen years since I went to the university, but from what I remember, in-state tuition then was probably $1,600 a semester. I'm not sure, though, since I had tuition covered, so I didn't pay a ton of attention.

Remember that there are varying levels to the Hathaway, just because a student qualifies for the Hathaway, doesn't mean they qualify for the full tuition amount. There are at least 3 levels to the scholarship with varying financial award based on a number of factors such as high school GPA and SAT and/or ACT score.

There is also a needs-based portion to the scholarship that can help pay for individuals that can't afford the other non-tuition costs if they qualify based on their FAFSA.

Yes a large portion of that was room and board. I made sure he had the unlimited meal plan because he was playing football. But still, Hathaway does not cover all of the tuition and fees not to mention books. His books for this last semester were $1400 Which his football scholarship paid for but for a walk on comes out of their pocket.

The Hathaway's a nice chunk, but it doesn't cover it all. They ought to raise the amounts the Hathaway gives out to offset the 50% increase in tuition the last 7 year. Higher education is getting to be a racket. Some days I really wish I would have become a plumbing contractor or an electrician when I was 18.

Nothing like getting paid $120 just to walk in the door

Going to be tough for the walk ons to get a scholarship with 23 signing in the 2016 class. Only leaves two spots open to hit the magical number of 25. Hope they can find academic money for them.

True, but don't forget that it is a near certainty that all 23 of these guys will not be here for their full 4-5 seasons (I.E. at least 1 is going to quit, transfer, get cut, etc.). That will leave a few more schollies open eventually.

This is very true. When my son was awarded his scholarship he was the only walk-on left from his class of 18. Sometimes it is more of a test of endurance than anything else. You have to embrace the struggle and grind through it every single day in order to persevere. I remember talking him off of the edge many times when he wasn't sure it was all worth it. However in retrospect he would never change a thing.......other than the career ending injury that is! He would give anything to still be playing for this his senior year.
