UW vs. UT-Martin

The season officially starts tomorrow night!

As others have already stated, I’m a bit skeptical that the depth of this year’s team is significantly improved over last year. It appears the only freshman who will contribute this season will be Washington III, and his defense is a weak spot right now. Vernon is still trying to figure out how to utilize his skills as an undersized power forward. He is no longer the most physical, strongest player on the floor at the college level and has struggled with that adjustment. Herndon isn’t ready from a physical maturity level. He literally is a boy amongst men at this point.

Granberry is still a bit of a mystery to me. From everything I’ve heard and seen, he does not lack the confidence to let the 3 ball fly from any spot on the floor. However, in the exhibition game, he seemed hesitant and passive with the ball. Shyatt isn’t usually one to get upset with players taking open 3’s, so I was a little puzzled with his lack of productivity, especially given that he was on the floor with non-starters for most of the 2nd half. Of course, nobody knows what’s going on with Hankerson. To me, the play of Hankerson will determine whether this team ends up in the upper half or lower half of the MWC. It sounds like he will at least be available for tomorrow’s game, so hopefully we get a clearer picture on his role.

Larry Nance looked like he has taken another step forward in his development as a basketball player. He’s bigger, more physical on the block, and has refined his offensive game. It’s always difficult to tell just how good he is when playing against far inferior talent, but I’m cautiously optimistic Larry Nance can be a top 10 player in the MWC this year.

Here’s a little information about the Pokes opponent, UT – Martin:

Player to Watch: Myles Taylor (6’7, 250 lbs, Junior)
Taylor was one of 10 players named to the preseason All-OVC team this year. He was honored as the OVC Freshman of the year and named to the All-Newcomers team in 2011-12. This guy is a load in the paint. He has remarkably good footwork and hands for his size, which makes him a legitimate offensive threat. He uses his physical style of play and strength to dominate the glass. He is a double-double threat every time he steps on the floor. It should be interesting to see how Nance’s increased weight and strength translates to his defensive game against physical players like Taylor. That will be a key match-up I’ll be keeping an eye on. I expect the Skyhawks to go to Taylor on the block early and often.

UT – Martin was picked to finish 4th out of the 6 team West Division of the OVC. They struggled to a 9-21 mark last season, with defense being their biggest weakness. The Pokes should be able to good looks at the basket whenever they want. A poor offensive showing by the Cowboys could be cause for concern, as this is likely one of the more porous defenses they will face this season. Looking forward to getting the season underway!

I think it'll be a growing season, but Larry we're gonna see truly what makes this kid special and I can see us stealing some games this year, but with the youth upcoming we're truly gonna be fine. Go POKES

Last year the rotation was about 7 or 8 players. This year Shyatt said he will use up to 10 or 11. The depth has improved a little. As of now we have Hankerson, Granberry, Washington, Halderson, and Vernon being in the mix off the bench...and I might be missing someone. Three of those guys are better than we had coming off the bench all of last year.

I think we're going have a much better season than people think. Or, maybe I'm too optimistic. Looking forward to some hoops tomorrow night.

Based on what? The guys we had coming off the bench last year (Cooke, Sobey, and Adams at the beginning) are starters now.

I'm guessing Cooke has improved considerably, I know Sobey has. Adams started most of the year as a true frosh. But, I think Hankerson will prove to be a very good player as will Washington (best freshman Shyatt has coached). And, Granberry started for 2 years at North Florida. My point is this group is better than the group coming off the bench last year...even if some of those guys are now starting.

Everyone seems to be so high on Hankerson, but, as I predicted, Grabau, Nance, Cooke, Sobey, Adams were the starters and will be Friday. So Hankerson fans, how long will it be before he is a starter (baring injuries to a starter), and who will he replace?

2 games. And he will replace Sobey.

Why do you think that? I think it would bode well for the team if Hankerson performs at that level. Just curious what you have heard/seen.

Just a gut feeling.
And since Hankerson wasn't allowed to play in the first two games (scrimmage at Utah and game vs. Colorado Springs).
I think he needs a game or two to get back into the groove of things then will be starting.
And same with Granberry.

Is UT-Martin noted for anything special, have they done anything earth shattering, has anyone famous come outta there that we may know???

Today's Denver Post has write-ups of each of the major area college basketball teams. For the Pokes, only two non-returners were mentioned: Granberry and Halderson. NOT Hankerson. Something going on we don't know about?

After reading the article, the only thing going on is a lack of research. He mentions we lost our top 3 leading scorers and we went on a downhill spiral after the unbeaten start. But, doesn't mention that we lost our leading scorer prior to conference play which led the downhill spiral.

There was a CST article a few days ago covering Hankerson and Granberry. We'll find out tonight if anything is up...but I think the article was lacking in research.

I think Hankerson if he performs at the level we have been expecting then he will start but I'm not sure it will be over Sobey.

Sobey actually looks like the 2nd best player on the team after Nance from what I have seen. He gets into the lane and to the basket better than anyone on the team. The only other person who seems capable of this is Adams and possibly TW3. Obviously Hankerson is supposed to be able to do it. We saw at the end of last year Sobey can get hot and drain the 3 ball. I think Sobey will start all year from what I have seen so far.

Hankerson will be taking someone else's starting position and it maybe a case where Wyoming goes with a 4 guard line up and you bring Cooke off the bench to spell Nance. You have Grabau at PG, Adams at SG, Sobey playing the 3 spot and Hankerson the 4 spot with his build. Of course this is all predicated on Hankerson playing up to what we expect.

We can all speculate on this for fun, the good news is that we won't have to for long since Shyatt knows what he is doing and we will get to see Hankerson in action tonight to see what he can bring to the court.

I could see Hankerson and Sobey kind of rotating who gets the start, but I think Hankerson spends more time at the 3 than the 4

Yeah I am not sure how the starting lineup is going to look in the future because we haven't really seen the team play but there are some interesting lineups we could run out there. I think one that excites me the most is Adams, Granberry, Hankerson, Cooke, and Nance. That is a big and athletic lineup.

Just a note for everyone, Shyatt told RG that Hankerson would be one of the first couple guys off the bench tonight, probably him, Granberry, TW3, and Haldorson are the first 4 off the bench.
