UW Swimming Lands Big Recruit

Trying to infuse a little good news into the board. Wyoming swimming picked up a huge recruit this week when Cheyenne Central swimmer Kyle White gave a verbal to the Pokes (at least according to the link below). This is a huge get for Wyo, Kyle would be the equivalent of snagging a 5-star football recruit from Alabama, Ohio State, USC, etc.

Just a sample of how Kyle's fastest times (as a high school Junior) stack up:
50 yard free (20.44) would be the 5th fastest time in UW history, and would have been 8th at conference this year.
100 yard free (44.76) would be the 4th fastest time in UW history, and would have been 7th at conference this year.

According to Collegeswimming.com, Kyle is the #48 high school senior in the country. Also, Kyle has only been working as a sprint freestyler for about a year and a half, so he has plenty of room for improvement. Huge get for Wyo, good job TJ and staff at keeping our local talent home.

In all sports, swimming has, I think made the biggest strides over the past six decades. When I swam at Wyo in the mid-fifties, the world record for the 100 yd was 48.9 and the 50 yd was 21.9. You could have won the NCAA's in the 50 yd with 22.1 and the 100 yd with 49.3. In the conference Wyo was in, winners had times of 24.0 (which was a conference record) and 55.3.

But the biggest improvement was in the distances - 440 yd and 1500 m. Now in the freestyle, Wyoming high school girls (Wyoming high school not known to be a swimming hotbed) would have cleaned up in the distances in the conference meet . The top boy's team would have won the title flat out.

Looking at the 4A girls state for 2012 and comparing it to the 1956 Mountain States Conference (which Wyo was part of then), in the 440, 9 girls bested the winning conference time, 5 in the 100 backstroke, 8 in the 220, 3 in the 100 free, and the 50 free would have been a tossup. All of the first place girl's time would have been conference records.
