Since many of you have had your Saturdays consumed with watching your own team, I thought you might enjoy a little analysis on your next opponent. I am very happy we are in with this conference with you and look forward to competitive games for years to come. Here comes the analysis:
Offense: If I could use a word to describe USU on offense it would be steady. Because of Chuckie Keeton's injury we are starting a Freshman QB we had every intention to RS. He has been decent: 77/975 6 TDS and 1 Pick. Our starting runningback is also out for the year so we have relied on the just-above-average Joey DeMartino. He does everything OK. Not great speed, decent lateral quickness, and does get tough yards after contact. The WR group has been good. No one has game breaking speed, but they generally catch balls thrown at them. We just lost our top yardage receiever for the year against the Rammies, but we have solid depth at the position and should be OK. Our O-line combines for the 8th most starts as a unit in the country. It features an NFL caliber center and three seniors and a junior around him.
Defense: Everyone would tell you they've been pleased with the defense this year. They are 7th in scoring defense and 12th in total defense. They only allow 119.2 rushing yards per game and 3.02 yards per rush. The linebacking core is deep and features three all MWC players. The defensive line has nine different guys that get time. The secondary has future NFL guy in Nevin Lawson. Besides him our corners are pretty weak. Our safeties are good in rush support, but a liability in pass coverage. The good news for you, is that in all the games we have lost, it has been due to long passing plays. Utah, BYU, Boise State, and USC all exposed our safeties over the middle. If I was your coach, I would go after our safeties aggressively.
ST: We have a good punt returner in JoJo Natson- He's generously listed at 5'7" 155. He may get killed but he's hard to track down. Decent kicking game and punt/kick coverage units.
Thanks for letting me post here. I am very nervous about this weekend, but hope the Bridger's Rifle makes its home in Logan for the next year.
