UNR in money trouble?

Stole this from Billings, who posted it on eGriz:
The Reno Gazette Journal- in today's edition- says the UNR athletic budget may lose $1.5 million which is a 7.5% budget cut for the next fiscal year. Those cuts could threaten UNR's D1 status. A university has to have $4 million in athletic scholarships to stay at the D1 level-UNR is at $4.6 million. They could cut programs but they have 6 men's programs which is the minimum and 9 women's programs which is 1 program above the 8 required but to cut a women's program could run afoul of Title IX. The athletic dept already is facing a $800,000 deficit so to cut another $1.5 million may just end their D1 status.

Here's an article about it...

A friend of mine when the Wolf Pack board and the possibity is very real than UNR will have to drop out of Division I. This could make the MWC look real bad.

If UNR does drop out, I can see the MWC begging BYU to come back and/or add Utah State.

No and hell no. The programs in the state of Utah can kiss off. (No offense to anyone living there)

I agree but the MWC may not have a choice in this!!!! It's survival of the fittest. If it means letting the arrogant bastards from Provo rejoin the party then so be it!!!!!!

Northern Colorado! A basketball Big Dancer. A football team the Pokes can beat. And Greeley - a town that smells worse than Laramie (actually Laramie doesn't smell, but Greeley sure does). And - it's close.

UNR will be fine. This is all just politician panic...mixed in with a bunch of misinformed horseshit.

Not too many years ago (3 I think) UW athletics struggled through a 8-10% budget decrease...which is a helluva lot more than what UNR is talking about. And we still pay a hefty price for our fucking men's and women's golf teams to travel the USA and embarrass the piss out of us. WTF.
