UNM President disputes Shyatt on tourney size talks

I don't post much here because I haven't had a lot of time to keep up with bball this year, but I thought this article was interesting. I couldn't copy the statement but in general says the decision to cut teams from the tournament was to have our better teams avoid playing low RPI teams with the theory that playing the bottom teams in the tournament inhibits the number of teams that go to the NCAA or negatively impacts the seeding of the teams we do send.

Honestly, I haven't looked at any data, but, on the surface, this doesn't pass the sniff test to me. Does 1 game against a bottom level team (assuming the higher ranked team wins) really impact seeding/selection?

I would lobby the 9th, 10th, and 11th place teams this year - as to how they would feel if it were 2017.

I would also watch what those team accomplish carefully. If none of them compete in the first round, that would be a bad podium to stand at and argue the point of inclusion.

Didn't someone have numbers last year when we were still on the bubble showing how much the SJSU game impacted our RPI? I think I remember seeing that, but can't find it. Granted, we won't always have a bottom 10 team in the nation

Read the article and you can see as politely as possible even his own AD did not back up the basic lies of the piece. There are several presidents and ADs who have admitted they did not even know the subject was going to be discussed at the meetings, much less voted on. It's a CYA announcement by the New Mexico president because a couple of national writers blasted the conference on Tuesday and Wednesday.
