UNLV getting spanked at home against UCSB...

Maybe Wyoming will have a chance to finish in the top 5 in the conference.

UNLV not only losing to UCSB at home but getting worked. 71-47 with 7 minutes to go.

After watching CSU get smashed by Gonzaga (granted Gonzaga is really good) but they lost by over 30 points and then seeing UNLV getting smoked at home gives me some hope that Wyoming can finish in the top half of the MWC this year.

UNLV looks like it is being led by a couple of guys who can recruit but can't coach for crap. Reminds me of someone at Wyoming who would lose to terrible teams at home by 20 points. Wonder if there is some sort of connection there?

I saw that as well pretty surprising. They have a terrible coaching staff and should be challenging for final fours with the type of talent they get. My updated conference prediction is as follows:
1. Boise
2. UNM
3. SDSU
4-7. WYO, CSU, UNLV, and USU
8. Nevada
9. Fresno
10. Air Force
11. SJSU

Boise is like the sheep last year, return a bunch of starters that keep improving. Alford didn't leave the cupboard bare at UNM, but their lack of post season success and offense that rembled ours is questionable (though I haven't had much chance to see how their new coach is doing) and SDSU has a well established HC running their program who knows what he is doing. Only question for them, is how long before he retires.

NM might not have much success in the Big Dance, but they own the MWC. Regular season play and MWC Tourney play.
They have to be the favorite until someone proves otherwise.
UNLV...wow. Enjoying Schroyer yet?
Wyo should finish no worse than 4th.
UNLV losing Bennett and Moser isn't good.
Yeah I know Moser didn't do much last season, but the fact that the coaching staff pretty much sat there and let him not be one of the most important players shows they are very incapable.
CSU blows by the way.

I think UNM splits woth BSU in the regular season and meet up for the rubbermatch in the CC game

UNLV will struggle this year.....but I think SDSU surprises a little.
He who shall not be named could recruit and recognize talent, but not much else. And his teams at UNLV are looking more and more like his teams here. That's not a good thing.

Wow, I expected UNLV to regress this year, but this is a suprising result. This result combined with the exhibition loss tells me there are some real problems in Vegas this year. I don't think this was a fluke.

The MWC is looking weaker by the day. From what I've seen so far, the MWC is a two bid league. I believe New Mexico and Boise State both make the tournament, but neither will be seeded very high given the MWC's history of poor performances in the tournament. I expect both to end up with something around a 6 seed. I think the only two other teams with a chance at an at-large bid will be San Diego State and Utah State, and in the end, I don't think either will ultimately get in. What a difference a year makes.

It's still very early, but here is my take on the MWC so far. I see 4 distict tiers of teams. Barring any significant injuries, this is how I see the conference playing out this year.

1. New Mexico
2. Boise State
------------------------
3. San Diego State
4. Utah State
-------------------------
5. UNLV
6. Colorado State
7. Wyoming
8. Fresno State
-------------------------
9. Nevada
10. Air Force
11. San Jose State

Why all the love for Utah state...have they beaten anyone of note ever? I don't get why everyone is hanging off their pouch like their something special. I don't get it I guess....

One reason, mainly: Jarred Shaw (C, 6'10, 235 lbs, Sr.)

Next to Alex Kirk of New Mexico, this guy is arguably the next best front court player in the conference. He is a double-double threat every single game. Having a legitimate offensive threat in a big man is a huge luxury these days and one that can elevate a team from mediocre to good/great. He is a transfer from Oklahoma State and played very well for Utah State last season after his manditory year sitting out. So far this season, he has averaged 18 ppg and 7 rpg. Oh, he also shoots about 80% from the free throw line.

To a lesser extent, Spencer Butterfield (G/F, 6'3, 205 lbs, Sr.)
He is coming off of hip surgery in the offseason, so it may be too soon to tell what his contributions will be this season. However, he has performed well in the first 2 games this season and is deadly from behind the arc.

To me, these two guys elevate Utah State to that second tier.

Don't get it either. I think they'll be good, but how good is yet to be determined.

To say the locals are getting a bit restless is an understatement....

Not being able to beat a zone defense....bring up any memories for anyone about some Wyoming teams coached by "he who shall not be named?" I think Rice and his staff better get things turned around or they all might be looking for work.
