Twitter contact is an NCAA recruiting violation...

So let the coaches recruit Paul Fatiausi and anyone else Wyoming is going after. Lobbying a recruit to attend a school is a recruiting violation. Educate yourself and don't do it.

It is a violation....but it is one committed 100s of times daily by fans of schools everywhere. Just earlier I saw a recruit from Los Angeles named Shay Fields literally asking fans on Twitter for support to see how many tweets he'd get. It is a violation in the rule book, but one that is not enforced at all. Not one school has or will be punished for its fans committing this "violation".

That said....Wyoming does not have the rampant Twitter following a USC, UCLA, etc. has.....so if you tweet a recruit, you're much more likely to get scolded for it than some of these 100s of fans who do it on the behalf of other schools.

Much like other rules, the NCAA can't enforce shit. But Cowboy Junky is right.....as the old joke goes, "Damn.....Alabama really fucked up this time.....the NCAA is going to slaughter Wyoming for what Bama did".

At work so not able to look up exact rule......but say...I dont work for the university etc...just as a fan, how can UW get in trouble if a random tweets "look good in brown and gold" etc?

Couldn't rivals tweet that etc to cause issues for the school? :twocents:

I think fans are allowed to tweet at recruits.
If they stop fans from tweeting at kids, then eventually they will make sure we never talk about them on message boards too.

they probably won't

but the ncaa defines "booster" ridiculously loosely

it doesn't hurt if we on this site keep that in mind

Great point, fans are not allowed to contact recruits on Twitter. I actually unfollowed a Wyoming fan on Twitter because he is a walking NCAA violation and I couldn't tolerate his stupidity any longer and didn't want to be associated with that particular person.

I was very saddened the day you unfollowed me. I hope to earn back your trust 140 characters at a time....

How come SEC fans are note getting punished for this? Or any of the big schools? I see fans of many schools flooding players twitters/facebook pages. We may follow the rules but it ain't helping us win.

Here's what I got back from UW this morning. Learn it, love it.

And here's UWs policy on social media as dictated by the NCAA:

Social Media Madness: Leave the Recruiting to the Coaches!

Over the past two years, social media websites (Twitter, Facebook) have changed the face of recruiting. Because of the digital recruiting age, the NCAA has started to regulate how boosters can interact with prospective student-athletes on social media websites. Boosters may not initiate or accept “friend” requests of prospects, but they may “follow” them on twitter. Fan should not post on a prospect’s wall, respond to a tweet or take any other action on social media that would be considered “contacting the prospect.” While technology has changed the game, the general rules stay the same. Please leave the recruiting to the coaches!! If you have any questions, do not hesitate to contact our compliance staff. Peter Prigge, Director of Compliance – 307-766-3795.

Social Media 101

· Boosters/fans may interact with current student-athletes on twitter/facebook, etc. Our Cowboys and Cowgirls appreciate the support!

· Boosters/fans may also interact with prospective student-athletes (recruits) via social media PROVIDED that recruit has signed a National Letter of Intent. VERBAL commitments are not enough. Boosters/fans should not reach out to recruits in attempt to persuade them to come to Wyoming. UW Coaches appreciate the support, but please leave the recruiting to the coaches!!

o Rule of Thumb – Do not attempt to contact/communicate with any UW recruits until the University of Wyoming Athletic Department has made an official announcement about a future Cowboy or Cowgirl.

· *Any recruiting solicitations from outside of the UW Athletic Department results in an institutional NCAA violation. Please see the link on a recent violation committed by the CEO of Twitter that Michigan had to file.

Let me know if you have any questions. Whatever information you are putting out there, please remind everyone that if any questions arise about what they can and cannot do on twitter/facebook, anything, do NOT hesitate to contact me at 307-766-3795 or [email protected]. We always say, “Ask Before You Act!”

Thanks again!

That doesn't stop the moron couch recruiters from being idiots. Last night there wasn't any Wyoming posts on Malik Johns twitter page. After reading the message boards and before this morning Ron Weltmer and Jeremy Burks decided to pick up recruiting violations for the team.

I don't know if the NCAA will ever enforce this rule. I think it's in place to keep fan bases from going ape shit recruiting atheletes on twitter. The big fan bases could exert a lot of pressure on a kid without some type of regulation.

Still, you can bet that if the NCAA enforces it, they won't enforce it against one of their big money teams like OU or Bama. They will enforce it at the expense of a team like Wyoming.
