Tuesday Morning Coach: FWIW

Just my dime. I had to think about this one a bit, before gathering the thoughts and posting.

The offense / Brett Smith:

First off, D1 FBS football is a violent game, played by violent people. Period. Is there intent to "hurt"...eh, yep, on every play. Maybe not to the point of death or severe injury, but there is intent to inflict physical harm on every single play...by almost every single player. This isn't tennis or golf...this is D1 football. "It ain't Intramurals brother!" - Dan Hawkins. My single biggest bitch about the game...when UW was up 14 - 3, why, for the love of god, can we not put the pedal to the metal, and get after it. We get passive, we get satisfied, and we relax. Why UW doesn't curb stomp the shit out of other teams bothers me. We don't have the instinct / culture? Is there too many old lady boosters in the stands, that want to see a close game and don't really care if UW wins or loses? Shit.

The defense:

We have more talent on defense right now, than we have had for probably 5 years. And yet, we continually shit the bed. Why? (Wyovanian)...the head man has the leash on too tight. Always has. Whether it was English, or now Tormey...DC needs to let them do their job. You could put Rex Ryan or Romeo Crennel in as DC at Wyoming, and with the way things are ran, that are going to be equally successful...which in other words, they are going to fail. It wasn't English that was a shitty coach, and it probably isn't Tormey either (although I have my own opinion on that). First time HC DC needs to learn to delegate and let coaches coach.

Enough for now. Need to go take a Diazepam. :tickedoff:

I've preached about the lack of killer instinct in this program for a long time. This is D1 football. It's not about people liking us because we're "nice" or because of some overly compensated sense of sportsmanship. At this level, when you've got the opponent head-pinned to the ground, you keep applying pressure. Their heads are pretty tough- have yet to see a program get resoundingly pounded and then fold, calling it a season.

I'm beginning to have my doubts about DC's management style. If he's asking for "success, conditional to..." from his coordinators, this is bad management 101. Whether he's trying to keep promises made to players, or just trying to bend the map to show everyone he IS where he thinks he SHOULD be, it's an ego-stroke at the expense of the program, and it's time someone calls him out for it. It's clear the guy knows how to find and mine QB talent, and, to lesser extents, OL and WR talent. But the job he's being paid for, more than anyone before him, is HEAD Coach, not offensive coordinator. While I'm still not sold on English, and Tormey so far hasn't impressed, one has to eventually look for accountability from the guy who put them both there, the guy who made the decision. The buck's gotta stop somewhere, and it should never be below the top. Management's most important task is to own their decisions, otherwise they'll never change their behavior.

Good post. Where I think this might have been Glenn's biggest weakness, I think DC might be over managing this team.

Thanks peachy...........football is still about hotting folks in the mouth........as of now........you are right on.......got me all pumped just reading it....... no excuses :thumb:
