Tournament lineup?

You guys act like burning a walk-on's redshirt is an abomination. Averbuck and Kelley are both freshman, meaning there is probably a very slim chance of them playing any next year either. We can play them during the tourney for depth this year, and they can just redshirt next year if they and Shyatt want, not a big deal.

I don't think anyone is saying its an abomination. However, burning the redshirt should be up to the player not the staff. And now it sounds like Averbuck is willing to do so. He and Kelley could conceivably want all 4 years of eligibility to play at a smaller school if they don't stick it out at UW after the season.

For the sake of this programs fan base and future they really should've held s half acre "tryout" and taken 2 or 3 students with them to LV. And put them in the games.

I would be willing to bet there would be a NCAA reason why we couldn't do that, such as roster size, eligibility, fund usage...something along those lines.

They could always redshirt next year. Neither are even close to projecting toward 8th man. That opportunity now is worth more than redshirting next year instead of this year

Will Cody Kelly play alongside Jason McManamen giving us the first time in who knows when that 2 WYO WYO players take the court for the Pokes at the same time??? It sounds like Cody isn't the best of the 2 walk ons but even if he's just on to foul that would be cool. What if Cody is the best of the 2 though???? Well still dreaming I guess. Tomorrow is gameday!

If coach shy didn't play Marshall so I don't really see the need to play a walkon during the tournament.

Shyatt needs to borrow a couple guys from Bohl. There is no reason to waste a red-shirt when this team has no chance of winning the tournament.

Burning a redshirt on a walk-on who may never see the court anyway, I don't think is a huge deal. Particularly if 3 of the 7 scholarship athletes left foul out. That would leave us with 4 on the court...although the chances of that are slim, very slim.

This thread has become quite confusing...walk-on redshirts, versus scholarship redshirts, versus whateverinthefuck Monkeyboy is talking about with McManeman.
Grab 6 guys from the football team and you still get to SDSU at best without wasting the red-shirt. This team has no chance at winning the MWC tournament. What's the point in wasting the kid's red-shirt over one or two games?

Why reward a football player (or six as you say) with a trip to Vegas, when you can give a freshman walk-on or two (again who will probably NEVER see the court - ever again - EVER) the thrill to play in the MW tourney and with Josh?

Essentially...it comes down to this: There is no such thing as wasting a redshirt when referring to a walk on player (in regards to hoops).
That Jack Bentz never saw the court now did he. He was terrible and got plenty of minutes. The current walk-ons have a lot more talent than Bentz. I'm sure they'll never have a chance to see the court over the next 4 years since Shyatt recruits such talented kids with high character who stick with the program until their senior year.

Jack Bentz...gotta love the fact he stuck with the program as a non-scholarship walk on player. And he was clearly rewarded as such, his senior year (and only his senior year) by Shyatt for doing so. But terrible is right, with an awesome state line of 22 GP, 8 MPG, an 11.1 FG%, and .4 PPG.

I would much rather have had (and seen) a scholarship athlete see the court and have playing time (in the instance of Jack Bentz 2014-2015, that would have been any of the following: Lieberman, Gorski, McManeman, Barnes, Herndon, Sellers - until he quit, and hell - could have even burned the scholarship redshirts on Williams and Washington looking back).

Lastly, if any walk on athlete is leading the charge for Wyoming basketball in 3-4 years, not only are we completely fucked on all accounts, but we have some serious internal issues and will be the perennial bottom dwellers of the MWC. That, and my season tickets along with CJC donations will have been cancelled.
Did I ever say these guys were going to be team leaders? You make a lot of assumptions and argue with ideas in your head.

You are counting these kids out as if they have no chance of ever being halfway decent. Sure, walk-ons are usually Jack Bentz quality. Scottie Pippen and Jeff Hornacek were also walk-ons. Some guys need time to develop. Shyatt has given scholarships to pretty meh guards while he's been here and his attrition rate is strong enough that he was going to sign two kids this year with only one scholarship available. Both of these guys can compete with the Jeremy Liebermans and Trey Washingtons of the world. At the very least, you hope they are capable of providing depth and 8 mpg when they are red-shirt seniors. That 8 mpg allows Shyatt to red-shirt a freshman or two which is supposed to help the program long-term. To throw that away over one or two games is shortsighted.

I agree. If I was in Cody Kelly's shoes I would be extremely mad that because of the stupidity of others I lose an entire year of playing for the pokes. If Jack bentz could have redshirted he would probably be playing a lot this year with how our gaurds have played. One to five games is not worth a year, even for a walkon. I would have brought football players that wanted to play. :twocents:
