Toss sweep

It's going to win us this game.

And it won us a couple of titles in the 90s. It's an effective play when you have the Line to run it. Do we have the line to run it in the Big Ten? Too early to say.

I'm guessing it's not going to work so well next week. We play like this and we're going to get drilled at Camp Randall.

So give us your honest opinion what did you think of Wyoming?

It's hard to say because I don't really know what Nebraska is yet.

I think your team showed a ton of fight. I think they looked like they know what they're doing, but they're young. I think they're just not the same caliber of athlete that other teams have, but they're the kind of team that you had damned well better play with respect or they'll beat you.

I think your QB is going to be damned good if he keeps growing and improving. He's already very far along as a Freshman, and he seemed poised and not at all intimidated by our rush. He looks like he has a good arm, makes good decisions and he should be quite good for you guys for another 3+ years. He's a good QB.

Overall you're a good team. That 3-0 wasn't an accident. Just play every game with the same toughness that they played us with, and they should be in every game this year.

I thought it was more option. Did you win the NC when the dude kicked the ball in the air and the guy dove and caught it for a TD?

We were always a Power-I team with Option mixed in. The Option wasn't the base of our offense - that's a common misconception.

And yes, we won the year that Scott Frost TOTALLY ABSOLUTELY intentionally bounced the ball off Shevin Wiggins' chest and foot and into Matt Davison's hands. It was the only way he could squeeze the ball in there through tight coverage. ;)

I don't know what B1G teams you're watching, but everyone i've seen has looked like crap, with the possible exeption of Wisconsin. The best team wisconsin has played was Oregon St, who got mudholed by Sacramento St. I think we could run toss sweep all season and still make it to the B1G championship game.

I agree with StickNnod, outside of Wisconsin the Big Ten looks pretty average. Ohio State had a nice win against CU today, but I don't think it made anyone forget that they stunk it up against Toledo and Miami. They should get better when they get the rest of their starters back, but even then they're probably not going to be a great team this year.

So anyway, there's every reason to think that boring old toss sweeps could help land us in the title game. With that said, I wasn't real impressed with Martinez either. The announcers said he looked 'in command'...I'd hate to see what not 'in command' would look like. When running the option play, I always worry that Martinez will leave his RB in the dust and have no one to pitch to. And as a passer there aren't many QBs that can get away with throwing behind the receiver on almost every pass. I can't help but wonder how good the backup (Brion Carnes) will be when he has a bit more experience. He didn't get to do much today, but I think back to that option play where he did a nice job of forcing the defender to commit to him and then made a nice pitch to the RB for a big game. Only one play, but he really seemed to get the whole point of the play (follow the blockers, made the defender decide who he is going to cover and either run it or pitch it for a gain).

I really like what I saw out of Wyoming. I think we can safely put last year's nightmare behind and look forward to a fun season (I live in Cheyenne, and follow UW as well). There's enough potential there to think about a 7-8 win season...maybe 9, though with a Freshman QB you pretty much have to think he's going to give away one game that the team should probably win and I'm not real hopeful about the Boise St and TCU games no matter how he plays.

My point is that regardless of how the other B10 teams looked, their D-lines have to be much much bigger than ours. Our DE's are converted LB's and our DT's could probably be DE's. The corn fed beef was able to move the line well, but I was equally impressed with blocking from the WR's. Just don't think you'll see the same from your conference mates.

I wasn't impressed with our tackling, although burkhead looks to be a beast to bring down.

I agree that Martinez isn't all too impressive. He threw those three straight incomplete passes and looked terrible doing so. He underthrew the WR when our S bit too hard on play action. He can run at times and there was a few that I thought for sure we were going to get him for a loss only for him to elude and cut it up the field for 7 or 8.

I'm sure there are plenty of W's on the horizon for NE, but I think they'll need Martinez to really step it up in order for you to win a B10 championship. We'll know at lot more a week from now.

In fairness, the toss sweep looked just as effective in the 2nd half the previous week against Washington too. The play really allows NU's offensive line to be at its best with guys pulling and leading the way. Seems to be our strong suit. Sure there's lots of speed at the skill positions for us on offense which gives us some great big play potential. But a good defense that can tackle well will negate much of the speed advantage. Overall I thought UW did a good job of tackling and thus containing NU...except for Burkhead who continues to look amazing. The only thing he really lacks as a RB is true break-away speed. But anyway, what I think will really help us win games the rest of the year is using our line's strengths like that again and hitting some deep throws out of those looks to keep the safeties thinking pass...now if Martinez can just learn to lead his receivers that would be a great help in that regard.

Agreed, Nebraska was and still is the team I will root for to win the big 10. I root for Iowa as well I just don't think they are as good. Wisconsin is THE other team in that league, I would be shocked if the champ isn't you or Wisconsin. Ohio St yuck, Michigan yuck, others yuck. My folks are Indiana Hoosier alumni but they only compete in basketball.
