Top 25 Watch

New Kid on the Twitter/Blog Block. This guy is actually watching the games rather than relying on computers and mathematical formulas. (Any pub is good pub for the Pokes!):

I still cannot figure out for the life of me how CSU has an RPI of 45, and yet UW only has an RPI of 50? lol. CSU hasn't played anyone. The Rams record is fabricated. They barely eeked out a two point win against UCSB. Also, if their RPI is higher than but their record is the same as Wyoming, why are they not receiving votes? The entire voting system is biased and flawed. RPI must be figured by drawing straws. Lastly, it is too funny that Howell did not give UW a vote. He must still be upset about that spanking...lol.

RPI & polls are one of my pet peeves. They are all based on where they are ranked to begin the season. Guess who gets the top rankings - the P5 - the media favorites - the espn favorites.

RPI is not at all based on where you begin since it's purely a mathematical formula. It is 50% your record, 25% your SOS, and 25% your opponents' SOS. The formula the selection committee uses gooses it a bit to give a bonus for road/neutral wins but it is a blank slate to begin each season.

Ok, what is SOS based on? I believe it is based on rankings per week. It does start to even out after about 10 or so games, but it is all based on pre-season rankings.

SOS is simply your opponents' record, and opponents' SOS is your opponents' opponents' record. Non D-I games are not calculated, so our games against Western State and Regis won't be factored in. BTW, the selection committee's bonus factor for road/neutral wins is supposedly secret but Jerry Palm and all those other stathead geeks apparently figured it out.

According to the ol' wikipedia, I had the ratios wrong, it's 25% your record, 50% SOS, and 25% opponents' SOS, so my bad on that, but you can read up here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rating_Percentage_Index

RPI tends to swing pretty wildly in the non-conference portion of the season because of small sample sizes, but really, RPI is an objective, purely mathematical formula. It's by no means perfect; in fact, it's a pretty blunt-force formula mathematically speaking, and someone who knows more about math than I do can tell you about better methods of statistically ranking teams, but it isn't accurate to say that it in any way reflects human bias.

CSU's two point win over UCSB is every bit as good as our three point win over NMSU. UCSB has one of the top players in the country in Alan Williams and are projected by many to be in the NCAA Tournament. UCSB's record may not look all that impressive right now, but they've played one of the toughest schedules in the country up to this point. Add in the fact that CSU beat them on a neutral court, and one could easily argue that win is more impressive than our win over NMSU.

Based on what I've watched of both CSU and UW this season, I think these are two very evenly matched teams. Should yield some very competitive games. Looking forward to it.

We're deeper than CSU, but I think the starting lineups are reasonably well matched. I'm not going to hold too much judgement on CSU until after I see them play a pretty good team at home and a true road game. I'm slightly in the same boat for Wyoming, but history has shown that Shyatt-coached Wyoming teams play well on the road. CSU teams are typically awful on the road.

I honestly think that Wyoming is the class of the league this year. They're every bit as good as SDSU defensively, and honestly, quite a bit better offensively. SDSU doesn't have a single scorer on that team. We have several true scoring threats. CSU is going to be tough because they're well coached and have a talented starting lineup, but I like our chances against them if we can get them into foul trouble or wear them down in the 2nd half. They don't have anyone on the bench.

game at a time and i think come conference time we'll get the Sheep amongst others, gonna be a sweet season, me thinks

I agree that the head-to-heads with CS-ewe will be barnburners, most likely. I've seen enough of the sheep so far to come to that conclusion. I just think Nance is the deciding factor in those matchups. Make Avila go to his right with his back to the basket and stick Adams in Bejarano's jock on the perimeter.

Speaking of SDSU, would love to see them pee down their legs for three consecutive years in the AA. Overall, they shot the ball much better in Maui. We'll need high energy crowds for both SDSU and CSU in Laramie. Pokes need to take care of business during OOC play first, though.

Not sure I agree about the Pokes being deeper than CSU. I actually like the Pokes starting 5 better, but the matchup is a lot less favorable as you start to look at players 6,7, and 8 (especially if Antwan Scott is healthy or available, but I don't know his status). We don't have anybody coming off the bench with the productivity of a Gillon or Clavell. They also have more flexibility as they can play a lot of combinations due to the size and rebounding ability of Kidd/Avila/Bejarano.

Both teams are poor on the road (.357 for Shyatt at UW, .333 for Eustachy at CSU).

Nance will be the best player on the floor though in those games though.

Look at the margin of defeat on the road for Shyatt vs. CSU. Wyoming plays well, but has a tough time getting over the hump against teams that, in the past, have been far superior. We don't drop too many road games that we shouldn't, and we almost never get blown out. CSU gets run out of the gym when they leave Ft. Collins.

I only say this because we're a better team now than we've been in the past. With our past competitiveness on the road, I expect this team to be a road warrior. CSU, on the other hand, should still struggle away from Moby.

Hey new #Cowboy friends - thanks for the shout-out below! One small correction: I'm not the new kid on the block, but just a new kid to the Cowboy bandwagon. In fact, last season my first blog post on November 5, 2013 was about how UCONN was one of Vegas's top underdogs that can win a championship.

Seriously, check it: http://collegebasketballeyetest.com/2013/11/05/my-starting-line-up/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

And, like you, I appreciate any pub I can get. I'm also looking at potentially going to the Colorado State game this season to see this squad in person.
Happy blogging,

This can't be overstated enough. CSU's gym sucks and is kind of sad really    The AA is kinda of its own unique legendary gym. I know this is a Wyoming board but you can look it up and you'll find some articles about it. I don't miss a ton about not living in Laramie but I do miss the AA. It's an awesome spot for a game especially when it's rockin!!
