Time of Possession is a totally worthless stat

Broncos have had the ball for less than a minute.
San Diego has had the ball for over 14 minutes.
End of first quarter, Denver is up 7-3.

Its not the idea of a hurry up offense I'm against, its the idea of NOT making ANY adjustments when the other team's defense has snuffed out each and every play.

Ok DC.

For fuck's sake - it isn't just the time, it is what you do with that time, and if you have the TEAM to make it effective.

Those hurry up 3 & outs yesterday were a blast. I especially liked the hurry up 3rd & 1 and 4th & 1 calls.

I believe Stanford would say that TOP is a pretty meaningful statistic. They held the ball for 42 minutes against Oregon and kept that explosive offense off the field by running it down their throat.

You can make an argument for that, yeah, but then again I can use the same argument I am right now.
Stanford didn't win that game because of time of possession. They won it because their defense.

Time of possession doesn't translate into wins or losses, same with total yards gained.
It's all about points.

And I am not referring to anything about the Wyo team when I said that, don't twist words and go on some rant about something I am not even talking about...

All I said is time of possession is a totally worthless stat. And it is.

What matters is execution and adjusting to the situation. We haven't been doing either. Denver has.

Isn't that the whole point of coaching? Do adjust to situations and make sure the players execute?

Again, when I say time of possession doesn't matter, I am not talking about Wyomings lack of time of possession. I am just pointing out how it doesn't translate to wins.

And whoever mentioned the Oregon-Stanford game, if you want you can look at what games Oregon actually did win the time of possession. They still win 90% of those games.

Uhm, I'm agreeing with you Beav, that TOP means jack.

Technically speaking EVERY stat is meaningless expect points scored/points allowed. What TOP and other stats do such as total yards, turn-overs, etc., is give you a measure of how the game played out and usually is a good indicator of who won the game. I would guess you could look at stat lines of many games (without seeing the score) and guess who the winner was. It also show tendencies and what you can expect of a particular team in the future. In other words, something for all of of us to talk about.
