I've always liked New Mexico cause they're kinda like the desert version of us. Their hoops team has done nothing but represent our conference well. They have a passionate fan base as well.
That's exactly right.
I've been to the Pit a few times, to one of their football games, and around them a lot in the Vegas MWC tournaments. A few things:
They love their basketball. (With football, though I have less experience around them for that, it always seems they just roll their eyes at the futility NM exhibits on the field.)
They are very, very knowledgeable fans, on both the men's and women's side. Without exaggeration, every time I'm in Vegas I get in a bunch of conversations with NM fans who can give a complete rundown of the strengths and weaknesses of every MWC team's roster, and every coach. It's kind of amazing.
While they live and die with UNM hoops, Wyoming is second -- distant second, you know how that goes -- for them, as they would like UW to thump everybody but them. Not sure why, but it seems to be something like we are cousins, schools without all the advantages but with salt-of-the-earth fans who aren't assholes.
When I'm in Wyoming gear walking out of the Thomas and Mack and into the parking lot, I'd say I get on average about four offers of beers from those good people.
