I think its time to point out and talk about how Wyoming performs being an underdog vs. the favorite. The hunter vs. the hunted, if you will. This goes for football and basketball as well as pretty much all sports.
One of the best phrases I've heard regarding this issue is.... you can't be afraid of success. In order for us to go to the next level, we must be able to perform as the favorite.
As we begin to win, we begin to gain respect, and we creep up and eventually enter national rankings. Once there however, we transition from the hunter, to the hunted. How do we respond? Lately, not very well. I think because of the lack of respect Wyoming has Nationally we tend to get overlooked by opponents and are able to pull upsets because of this. BUT, when an opponent plays a Wyoming team that is ranked or gaining some respect, they play better against us. For example, we cracked the top 25 directly before the 1st SDSU game. In a conference where its hard to find good wins, suddenly beating #25 Wyoming becomes a good win and we get the opponents best shot because they want to bolster their tournament resume.
In order for us to truly take the next step in football or basketball, we must understand how to handle success and how to handle teams best shot. A lot of it is being mentally prepared. Maybe just maybe becoming the hunter again in basketball bodes well for the MWC tournament.
