The great Twitter debate: Retire numbers?

Fairly large debate this morning on Twitter started by Brandon Ewing, then quite a few others joined in.. thoughts on hanging names on banners in the AA? Not necessarily retiring numbers, rather, hanging a name and number on a banner from the ceiling from the AA. Lots of benefits to do it. What are your thoughts?

If they earned special awards or something, like All-American or Conference Player of the Year or along those lines, sure.

The more hanging banners the better - even if it is just a number that hasn't been retired. The AA is lacking things hanging from the ceiling!

Im sorry to say it, but if a past player is lobbying on social media to get his own number retired, that is bad. Sailors number was retired...and he truly deserved it. I am ok with recognizing players of a decade on a banner, but unless they have a great impact on the game, they should not get their numbers retired.

I disagree. Too many just makes it so none are paid attention to. Banners for All-Americans and any championships. And that's it.

I don't think you retire the numbers... I have no problem with the names being up somewhere, like a ring of fame type thing... but in college basketball you can only wear 0-5 10-15 20-25 30-35 40-45 50-55 that's what, 36 numbers to choose from? (I am no good at math) so then you have 12 guys with numbers and some of the people on twitter wanted like 10 dudes numbers retired that leaves the 12 players with 26 numbers to choose from and what if you retire their number, the number begins to shrink, this is opposed to the nba where you can wear 0-99... Like i said a ring of fame or banner of fame makes sense it would be great for recruits and they would aspire to be up there. I think there is a way to honor our greats without retiring the number. Now, you can retire numbers but you have to set a certain criteria for example at UNC you have to be named POY to get your number retired

I read the twitter comments and found it very interesting. I agree that we should hang some jerseys from the rafters but not retire numbers. It would be a boost in recruiting to see great names like Dembo, Leckner, Slater, Ratliff, etc. The kids wearing those numbers will also take extra pride in doing so. Just to add some more tradition to the Arena...
