The D

In Bohl's last 3 years, he won 4 games when the opposing O scored 26 or more. He lost 11 in the same scenario. There were 4 games lost where the opposing O scored less than 26.

This year, 6 games had opposing Os over 26 points. Percentages say Bohl would have struggled if the D performed to this level. Naturally, the o can impact the d so maybe with a Bohl o, the Bohl D would keep opponents to lower scores.

There's been a steep decline in defensive performance, regardless.

Not saying scheme and play calling doesn't have something to do with the regression, but we have also had horrible linebacker play this year.

After being spoiled with several great MLB's in a row, #43 has struggled mightily. He is often out of position, has trouble shedding blocks, and isn't a strong tackler.

I think the defense has underperformed this year. I place much of the blame on overall coordination during the games. I saw multiple instances were the play call was either late nonexistent or confusing not to mention seemingly unable to manage substitutes as needed.

Honest question because I don't have time to look it up. What's the number when adjusted for points given up by the offense? Pick sixes or turnovers in FG range, etc.?

Serious question here. Did we make a defensive adjustment that caused NM to try to throw more in the 4th? I can't understand why they did it after torching us for long runs the entire game.

It certainly looked in the 4th like they stayed with 4 down and mixed in bringing 1-2 more rushers to hurry the pass or fill the rushing gap and it worked.

Most of the game seemed like it was played with 3 down dropping 8 into coverage with an occasional delayed extra pass rusher and the slicing and dicing by UNM was done with ease.

I feel that most of this season has been influenced by the high number of empty possessions taking its toll on the defense.

The UNM game was the most discombobulated scheme I have seen this season and it took until the 4th quarter to resemble more of what they had been running most of the year.

I didn't look that closely but your point is good. The o this year put a lot of strain on the d so may not be an apples to apples comparison.

Oh, hiring Bohl has been an abject failure. FIRE HIM
He’s young & inexperienced - not many guys get a mid-major coordinator gig as their first time calling a defence and it sure seems like he might be in over his head. I thought Sawvel would have a heavy hand in the defence - and mentor his young coordinator through his first year…Is that something that’s been happening do you think? What’s the thought - will Baby Bohl improve with some a year of experience under his belt do we really need to make a wholesale change like the elder Bohl did when he got rid of Stanard? I know we’re talking about defence right now, but what are our thoughts on the offense?

Without being around the team on a daily basis it is impossible to know how much Savwel is or is not involved in preparing the defensive game planning. What is clear is that on game days the handling of personnel and relying of defensive signals has not been good.

UNM was missing its most talented WR and still gutted us (although mainly with long runs and inexplicably bad tackling and fundamentals).
