Surprised (Air Force game)

Maybe it was because I actually got to watch the game but, am I the only one who is surprised we weren't blown the hell out of the water last night?

Honestly, before this game, I expected the Falcons to have 350yds rushing in the first half and that we would be down by at least two TD's going into the locker room.

When the Brett Smith news hit, I doubled both of those numbers.

Those of you who got to watch the Nevada game probably have a different view but, I was pretty impressed by our 'weak spots' (mainly run D). The young new QB was a treat to watch as well and I really had a ball watching our running game get going (reminded me of Thunder and Lightnin).

Again, I don't have the benefit of the week to week visuals that most of you do but, I was expecting a severe blowout in this game.

I regret to admit, I agree that I was as pleasantly surprised that we were competitive, as I was unpleasantly surprised with our coach losing his composure on the field after the game. (and against USAFA on military appreciation day...ouch)

USAFA is bad this year, but since the Cowboys' only win this year was in overtime against one of the most hapless programs in the US (Idaho). I thought we would struggle to compete. The first half was a pleasant surprise. The last half was a predictable return to form.

What does it say when the UW faithful are pleasantly surprised that we didnt lose as badly against a poor team as we might have?

It says its time for a change. Starting with the AD.

frI was extremely surprised. I was expecting a repeat of the Cal Poly game. Instead, we outgained them both in the air and on the ground and even took the time of possession. How often does that happen against Air Force? We held them under their average and kept their nation leading rusher in check. (2nd week in a row we held the nations #1 rusher under his average) For the first time this year we competed as a team instead of a one man show.

If we can ever figure out how to close out a game we will be in business. Every game except Texas we had a lead in the 4th quarter. In all those games we let them tie it up or go ahead in the closing minutes. THAT is our problem. Fix that and we're in business. We were a 4th qtr team last year, this year we are anything but a 4th qtr team.

Amen.

I hope the team gets something out of these losses. I give up trying to predict anything because last week's weaknesses turn out to be this week's strengths. If they ever figure out how to play 4 consistent quarters, this will be a very dangerous team.

Just my 2 cents.

I'm pretty suprised by this one as well. Our TOP was 35 minutes to AF's 24 minutes. Our defense shouldn't have been that tired. We couldn't defend against the pass yesterday - that killed us - AF 7 passes for 141 yards and that was when we had them shut down.

I was happy with Thompson's play - that guy is a beast and looks to be a good QB to have as backup. The O line did a pretty good job, but at the same time AF's Dline was 50lbs lighter on average.

It was a tough loss for sure, and it has been a rough season full of tough losses, but we are a good/competitive team.

Definetely - seems like we loose all of our games in the 3rd or 4th quarter while taking the lead pretty early.

I'm not going to lie - I expected a bad loss when Smith wasn't playing but I was really upset after we lost anyway. Mostly because I felt we had the game and let it slip away. Our receivers caught everything in the first half, but when the rain came, it seemed like they couldn't catch a cold if their lives depended upon it. Not sure why the defense decided to completely break down every time either, but it's not like I expect anything from them anymore.

It was a tough loss, but if I could pick a team to lose to, it would be Air Force every time. Unfortunately, we've lost to pretty much everybody else as well. Can we at least keep the freaking boot?

I would never have guessed that afa would beat us with their passing game.
This. Says a lot about our pass defense when a triple option team beats you through the air.

the worst part about losing by them passing is that we weren't even close on defense. Wide open. Like Nevada all over again.
