Sternberg raising some issues

Apparently pres. Sternberg is hiring an outside consultant to evaluate our athletic programs. Check out post on gowyogo.

From TheCup:

Finally an administration in Old Main that gets it - big CST story tomorrow Reply
Vorel has a big story in tomorrow's CST. Apparently President Sternberg has engaged an outside consultant to review the football and basketball programs, with a special emphasis on the football program. Sternberg directly cites the CSU debacle as a factor in his decision to initiate the review - and says the purpose is to get us back to winning, successful programs worthy of the top land grant institution in the country.

First, congratulations to Vorel for a great story. And congratulations to President Sternberg for saying what needs to be said - the football program right now is mediocre and this is unacceptable to our fans - and, importantly - to him as president of the university.

I don't think there's much pressure on Shyatt. Only his 3rd year back and has had winning seasons all 3 years he's been here.

Football, yeah, the SJSU game will have Sternberg's and the review comittee's full attention.

If they loose, I hope DC at least is allowed to ride the bus back from the airport into town. Lol. Just kidding.

I think Burman needs to go before DC.
Fire Burman if this season (football and basketball) don't result in two MWC titles.
Have the new AD fire DC after Brett's senior year if we don't have some MWC titles, and Top 25 rankings.

Wow....awesome to hear.

And on the flip side, I hope this lights a fire under those programs, specifically football. You know things are going bad when a freaking consultant is being brought in to assess things.

I am not too surprised by this, and am actually surprised it didn't happen sooner. This Pres seems to really understand how important sports are to a University as a whole. I am very excited about this news, and I agree with BP if they decide there is a problem then the AD needs to go first and the new AD should be the one to evaluate the coaches.

This is EXACTLY what I am thinking.

Even though I originally said give DC 1 more year after the new AD, he might deserve another (assuming we are bowling this season and next and are winning more than just 6 games a season).

Maybe DC would get more money to hire better assistants.

Get a new AD, then let him take charge.

Bottom line though, Pokes have to win bowl games, in football consistently. And in hoops make the NIT at very worst consistently, but typically the Big Dance.

I just want Wyo football winning 8-10 games consistently with a MWC title once every 4 years MINIMUM. And going to bowl games every year (the occasional down year is to be expected) and winning at least 2/3 years they go.
I just want Wyo basketball winning 20-25 games consistently with 1 MWC regular season title, and 1 MWC Tourney title every 4 years. And going to the Tourney every 2/3 years and making the NIT in the down years.

Kudos to Mike Vorel for this upcoming story and TheCup for the scoop. It's a very interesting development. Reading the early thread on Ian's site, I get a big kick out of Pope Ringolsby scrambling to let anyone and everyone know that he knew about a hired consultant weeks ago. I do not share his concern of monies spent on multiple possible consultants and the assertion that any fees could have been better spent directly by the athletics department.

What I hope, desperately, is that a consultant hired by Sternberg is used as an independent justification to fire Burman. All this is speculation right now of course, but it sure makes me giddy to think about what a hired, neutral third party thinks of the results of UW's sports teams under the watch of Tom Burman. I'm very optimistic that big, long overdue, positive changes will be happening soon.

I'm gaining confidence in Sternberg, and that he has what it takes to end the good old boy system that is Wyoming athletics. It will be interesting to see what the findings are. I think a start would salaries for assistant coaches.

Here ya go...

All a consultant is going to do is say we need to earn a sh!t-ton more money for facilities and coaches we already know about.

Smokescreen.

I'd bet good money they don't find much lacking facility-wise. We are at (or soon will be) the top of the conference in terms of facilities. This is probably the most frustrating part of where we are vis a vis program performance- we've pumped tens of millions into facilities (with more to come) and when you look around the conference, there's not much that's better.

Salary-wise, I think there's going to be some recommendations for increases- especially for the 1st line assistants in football and basketball, as well as increases in non-revunue/ Olympic sports.

The most likely findings will be, in my opinion, a lack of clarity of vision, a lack of pathway through mission, a lack of accountability through standards, and a lack of executive culture. While the text won't likely be verbatim, the context and conclusions will be along those lines.

This is great news. Not the fact we shit the bed against CSU. But the fact we have a president who wants to see athletic success. Look no further than Boise to see what can happen when a president wants a successful football program.

Everyone needs to be held accountable.

Go Pokes!!

I think they will say lower your academic standards for athletes. Increases the base of athletes you can recruit from. Boise st. Is an example of that type of recruiting. It's also why schools like Texas st. can pick up better talent after being d1 for a year. I don't see why a school like Uw should have self guided limitations on academics, transfers, and jucos while schools in the SEC openly pay players ( cam newton).

I say get a bunch of D grade point average athletes who have high interest from the PAC 12 conference and let them take interdisciplinary studies. She have a pretty good athlete tutor center. I fail to see why we have to play by a different set of rules than other ( major) schools.

In order to play, an athlete has to have a minimum 2.3 GPA out of high school. And even then, they will need a decent SAT or ACT score to qualify. This is an NCAA standard, not sure if UW requires higher but if they do it probably isn't much more strict. Perhaps someone else might have a better idea if UW requires a higher GPA for its recruits.
