Big Weekend Coming up. . .
The Cowgirl volleyball team hosts a big home weekend beginning with San Diego State on Thursday night at 7 p.m. followed by the University of Nevada on Saturday at 7 p.m. Both events will be held in the UniWyo Sports Complex. For San Diego State, UW is offering a free Pepsi product to the first 300 fans coming through the gates. The Nevada match is Family Night, which is part of the university’s Family Weekend celebration. Great crowds are expected since the Cowgirls are the only program at home this week so get to the UniWyo early! The Cowgirls are back in action next Monday, October 1 to host CSU Pueblo at 7 p.m.
Smith Well-Decorated This Week. . .
While the Cowboy football team is in the middle of its bye week, there’s plenty to talk about thanks to quarterback Brett Smith. The star of last week’s victory at Idaho, Smith was named the Mountain West Conference Co-Offensive Player of the Week. He shared the honor with Stefphon Jefferson of the Pokes’ next opponent, the University of Nevada. This is the third time Smith has been selected for the award. He had quite a game at Idaho throwing five touchdown passes while completing 23 of 35 passes for a career-best 365 yards. He engineered touchdown drives of 75, 90, 97 and 78 yards for his team. In case you were wondering the Cowboy single-game record for touchdown passes thrown belongs to Scott Runyan who tossed six TD’s on November 7, 1987, at New Mexico. The Pokes won that game, 59-16. Runyan lettered for the Cowboys from 1984 through 1987.
Football Back Home on October 13. . .
While the Pokes use the bye week to heal and prepare for the University of Nevada a week from Saturday at Reno, fans can look forward to the next Cowboy home game on October 13. It’ll feature one of the Pokes’ best rivals through the years, Air Force Academy. That game will have more festivities associated with it than any other home game this campaign. Not only will it be Homecoming, but it is Military Appreciation Day as well. There will be lots of activities to enjoy prior to and after that Cowboy-Falcon matchup.
