Community Service the SAAC Way. . .
Very few folks outside of UW’s Intercollegiate Athletics Department know what SAAC is all about. But it has a very important function. The mission of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee is to enhance the quality of life of the student athlete and to promote a positive student-athlete image both on and off campus. A few of the many components of SAAC’s mission include: to inspire and develop student-athletes into leaders of character beyond athletics; to plan community service projects which involve student-athletes; to coordinate academic affairs with the lives of student-athletes, and to act as a voice of UW student-athletes in regard to NCAA regulations and university matters.
There are 31 members on UW’s SAAC committee representing every one of UW’s intercollegiate athletic programs. The president is Mara Cosgrove from soccer and the vice president is Jeff Frey from the swimming team. Their community service includes projects like Toys for Tots at Christmas, Read Across America and Lunch With Children.
The committee organizes numerous community-service functions. Last Sunday was an excellent example as 67 members of the Cowboy and Cowgirl swimming team spent all day picking up trash along stretches of I-80 northwest of Laramie.
“The Highway Cleanup went really well on Sunday,” said Amanda Fay, a Cowgirl diver and a member of SAAC. “Our entire swim team showed up to help, and it was a great way for us to give back to the community.”
Tom Johnson, Wyoming’s head swimming and diving coach, said that his program continually looks for ways to contribute to the community. “We had a beautiful day Sunday for the highway clean up. It was a great opportunity for the kids to give back to the community for the tremendous support we have received over the years.”
Fan Fest a Huge Success. . .
The first annual athletics department Fan Fest prior to last Saturday’s Cal-Poly football game was a tremendous success. Children from all over Wyoming participated in the two-hour event in the Indoor Practice Facility.
“I’ve heard nothing but great feedback about the Fan Fest,” Athletics Director Tom Burman said. “It’s a great outreach event that allows young people from across the state to interact with our student-athletes. I’d like to thank our staff and our student-athletes for making it a success.”
It’s official for the 20th Class. . .
The 1985 National Champion Ski Team and six individuals—Dick Campbell, Len Kuczewski, Jordan Lintz, Chris Lull Terjeson, Selmer Pederson and Ray Sanchez—were inducted into the UW Intercollegiate Athletics Hall of Fame last Friday night. It was a memorable event, and we thank the folks at the Hilton Garden Inn as well as those in the athletics department who helped make the evening successful.
