It Finally Kicks off Saturday. . .
For the 116th time in its long and storied history the Wyoming Cowboys are opening a football season. It's coming up Saturday night at Texas. Through all those years the Pokes have won 66 percent of their openers. Against non-conference opponents in season openers they are even more successful, winning 72 percent of the time. When the Pokes take on Texas Saturday night in Austin, it will be the first time they have opened the season on the road since 2005, when they went to Florida. Dave Christensen has won all three of his season-openers as Wyoming's head coach. By the way, Texas is ranked 15th in the two preseason national polls. This will be the Longhorns 120th opener, and they have posted a 99-17-3 record. That mark is even better when they open the season in Austin (77-7-2). The Longhorns are number two on the NCAA all-time victory list at 858 victories. Texas trails only Michigan in all-time wins. By moving into second place, Texas unseated Notre Dame as number two on the all-time list. It marked the first time since 1932 that Michigan and the Irish did not occupy the one-two spot in all-time wins!
Football TV Schedule Released. . .
It took longer than everyone had hoped, but the Mountain West has announced the regional telecasts for the 2012 season. Bottom line, the Cowboys will have four home games televised--Air Force (Root Sports), Boise State (CBS Sports Network), Colorado State (KTVD, Channel 20 Denver) and San Diego State (Root Sports). Root Sports will also televise the Pokes' road game with Fresno State. Two additional road games--New Mexico and UNLV--may be aired by a carrier in Wyoming. The only games that are not scheduled for television are Toledo, Cal Poly and Nevada. The Cowboys' opener with Texas is being televised exclusively on the Longhorn Network. That network is not available on cable systems in Wyoming. It also is not available on DIRECTV nor on DISH Network.
Special Events Set for Home Football Season. . .
As is the case each year, Cowboy home football games are filled with special events from the Buddy Walk at the home opener with Toledo through Senior Day for the San Diego State game to end the home season. The two busiest days, event-wise, are the Cal Poly game on September 15, and the Air Force game on October 13. Hall of Fame Day, Band Day, Ag Day and Campus Pass Day are all scheduled for Cal Poly. In addition, the athletics department is adding a pre-game event which it hopes will become an annual tradition. Called Fan Fest, the event is geared toward children, and will involve each Cowboy and Cowgirl intercollegiate sport setting up stations in the Indoor Practice Facility (IPF). Children will be able to work with student-athletes at the station or stations of their choice. It all begins at 1 p.m. and will run through 3 p.m., with kickoff for the game at 4 p.m. It should be a lot of fun for everyone involved, and we hope will become a tradition. The Air Force game also will be a busy day with Homecoming as well as Military Day festivities.
