Madness, Wyoming Style. . .
March is madness month, and there is excitement over the next couple of weeks filled with post-season possibilities.

This week the Cowboy and Cowgirl basketball teams open play at the 2012 Conoco MW Championships at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas. The other two games will be two-seeded UNLV vs. New Mexico, the seven seed at 7 p.m. MST and three-seed Colorado State, meeting Boise State, the sixth seed in the nightcap at 9:30 p.m. MST.

The Cowboys will play UNLV for the second time in less than a week at the Thomas & Mack Thursday at 9:30 p.m. MST. Number one seed San Diego State opens the tournament against Boise State at 1 p.m. MST followed by Colorado State and TCU in the four-five seed game at 3:30 p.m. MST, and New Mexico (two seed) and Air Force (seven seed) at 7 p.m. MST.

Individual Basketball Honors Earned by both Cowboys and Cowgirls. . .
Huge congratulations to several Wyoming basketball players who earned post-season honors this week. The biggest congrats goes to the smallest player. The Cowboys' JayDee Luster was named the Mountain West Defensive Player of the Year. What an honor for the little man with the huge heart. He has limited 10 of Wyoming's 14 MW opponent players below their season scoring average. He is mayhem personified for opposing guards.

Redshirt junior forward Leonard Washington was named to the MW's Second Team and senior guard Paco Cruz earned an Honorable Mention nod.

On the Cowgirl side, junior forward Chaundra Sewell was selected to the MW's Second Team, freshman guard Kayla Woodward to the Third Team, and junior Ashley Sickles earned Honorable Mention. Sewell also was named to the league's All-Defensive team.

Zowie for Zamprelli. . .
How about Cowgirl junior Dana Zamprelli! The Castle Rock, Colorado native fired a final round of 71 at the Northern Arizona University Red Rocks Invitational over the weekend to finish second in the tournament. Zamprelli began the final day of competition tied for 26th. Her score was the best round of the event, and was the best of her career.

As is the norm for Mark Branch's wrestling team, the Cowboys won their third consecutive Western Wrestling Conference Championships/NCAA West Regional last Sunday at Cedar Falls, Iowa. Four Cowboys won championships, Shane Onufer (165), Pat Martinez (174), Joe LeBlanc (184) and Alfonso Hernandez (197). In addition to those four qualifying for the NCAA Championships, two other Cowboys earned a spot as well, Michael Martinez (2nd at 125) and Zach Zehner (2nd at 133). Onufer won his fourth WWC title, while LeBlanc earned his third and Pat Martinez his second.

Success Already Outdoors. . .
Two UW track and field student-athletes won events over the weekend at the UNLV Track Classic. In the first outdoor event of the year sophomore Erin Kirby won the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:01.49. Cowboy senior Jeremiah James won the triple jump, posting a mark of 51-0 3/4. The effort was made even more impressive by the fact that James had not competed in that event for almost a year!

Net Gain. . .
Wyoming's tennis team had an outstanding weekend at home, defeating both Denver University and Wichita State in the Indoor Tennis Facility. Both were outstanding wins. The ladies head to Hawaii this week. They take on Montana State, and Notre Dame at Honolulu today and tomorrow, then Hawaii on Saturday.

Cowboy Joe Club News. . .
If you are headed to Las Vegas for the 2012 Conoco MW Basketball Championships join Wyoming fans at Ferraro's Italian Restaurant. That's where the Cowboy Joe Club and the Alumni Association are hosting a pre-game hospitality. The event will begin two-and-a-half hours prior to each Cowboy and Cowgirl tournament game and end 30 minutes before tipoff. Food and beverages will be available to order off the menu. Ferraro's is located at 4480 Paradise Road.

The Club has reported that Laramie and Natrona counties raised over $460,000 during their annual fund drives. Albany County annually kicks off the fund-drive season, and raised nearly $381,000. Carbon County just completed its drive over the weekend with Goshen, Platte and Sweetwater fund drives coming up.

The online auction is in the books, and it was another successful one for the Club. According to Development Officer Sarah McCance, the annual event grossed more than $40,000.

The response for the Club's Sun and Fun Weekend in Scottsdale, which is sponsored by Infinity Power And Controls, has been terrific and tickets to the Rockies vs. Cubs spring training game are sold out, but there are still a limited number of spots available for the golf tournament Saturday. Please contact the Club at 307-766-6242 for more information.

Around the Chutes. . .
The men's and women's golf teams are in action next Monday and Tuesday. The Cowboys are competing at the Callaway Golf Collegiate Invitational at San Diego, and the Cowgirls are competing at the Fresno State Lexus Classic.

Two Wyoming swimmers are competing at the NCAA Zone E Diving Championships at Colorado Springs this week. They are Derek Campbell and Dalton Haas.
