What a weekend for UW's intercollegiate athletics programs. In addition to all kinds of team success, a pair of student-athletes were recognized as players of the week.
Soccer's Courtney Merkle was honored as the Co-Defensive Player of the Week by the Mountain West Conference. A native of Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada, Merkle recorded a total of 14 saves and allowed a combined two goals as Wyoming tied New Mexico (1-1) and defeated TCU (3-1). In the two overtime game with New Mexico, the Cowgirl keeper posted eight saves including a combined three game-saving stops in the two overtime periods. The Cowgirls, whose unbeaten string is at nine, host San Diego State on Friday at 3 p.m. and UNLV on Sunday at 1 p.m., at the Louis S. Madrid Sports Complex.
Junior wide receiver Chris McNeill was named the MWC's Special Teams Player of the Week for his performance in Wyoming's victory over UNLV last Saturday. McNeill returned a punt 76 yards for a touchdown, threw a 28-yard touchdown pass and also completed a two-point conversion pass. That TD on the punt return was the Pokes' first since the 2004 season, and the first this year in the MWC.
Cowgirl tennis players Veronica Popovici and Simona Synkova were outstanding last weekend at Las Vegas. The doubles team won the USTA/ITA Mountain Regional Doubles title. With that win, the team will now move on to the USTA/ITA National intercollegiate Indoor Championships. That event is scheduled for November 3-6, at the indoor facilities at the USTA-Billie Jean King National Tennis Center at Flushing, N.Y.
The Cowgirl Volleyball Team is on the road this week, Thursday at Air Force, and Saturday at Boise State. The Cowgirls are now 14-8 on the season.
The Cowboys won five events, and the Cowgirls two events at the Denver University Relays last Saturday.
